Joanne Penn 1 2012With four showcase events and various anthology launches, it is a busy and exciting time for our creative writing groups for children and young people, the Writing Squads! We now have sixteen creative writing groups meeting across the West Midlands one Saturday a month, some of these groups have been meeting for two or three years, and with so many talented young writers we are looking forward to hearing their work at several events this year. Coming up in April, members from all of the groups are invited to share some of their poetry at the Wenlock Poetry Festival. This free event is taking place in Priory Hall, Much Wenlock on Saturday 6 April, 2.30pm – 3.30pm.

Also in April, the Birmingham Writing Squad for those aged 11 – 16 have been working on pieces of writing to be published in an anthology next month. The group have received editing advice from Jane Commane of Nine Arches Press and have spent the past few months refining their work. Last week I had the important job of compiling all of their writing together to be sent off to Helen Calcutt and Lorna French the Birmingham Writing Squad writers who are now working on the final edit. It's been a learning process for all involved; I've particularly enjoyed seeing the writing come together and look forward to finally getting my hands on the finished book! They will be launching it at a special event on Saturday 20 April at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery – more details coming soon!

Coventry Mysteries 2012The year may have just begun but I am looking ahead to the summer when our Warwickshire groups will be taking part in an event at Coventry Mysteries Festival in June and all of the Squads will have the chance to take part in an event at the Ledbury Poetry Festival in July.

These are four brilliant opportunities to hear and read work by some young up and coming writers, the writers of the future!

All four of the events mentioned will be free, more details will be in our next season brochure (from April – July) and on our event calendar. You will also be able to buy the Birmingham Writing Squad anthology from mid to late April at the event and on our website.

Look out soon for our new online magazine too which will feature writing by children and young people; the first edition will be published in June and will feature writing from some of the Squad members aged 11 – 16. Future editions will be open for entries from all children and young people with each edition for a different age group.
