Sian Buckley 1 2012It's a few days to go until the second instalment of our popular storytelling series, Tell Me On A Sunday, and we are gearing up to hear true tales on the theme of Strange Encounters.

Before last month's episode, the space was bustling with chatter and the clinking of wine glasses as guests tucked into a (delicious-smelling) selection of tapas. However, as compere Cat Wetherill took to the stage to introduce the evening's storytellers and the theme of City Living, a contented hush fell over the audience. We went on to listen as the storytellers painted vivid pictures of their memorable cities, some of whose were right here in Birmingham, one in nearby Coventry, and the furthest in America!

I was enthralled listening to performance poet Kate Walton's tale of recovering in a hospital bed after a particularly nasty spider bite, to discover that her neighbour was none other than James Taylor's son, Ben Taylor, and sitting at his side was Carly Simon, who serenaded her with her hit song "You're So Vain". Kate added that certain details of her story may or may not have been embellished by her rather strong painkillers!

Tell Me On A Sunday January 2013Another story that struck a chord with me was Gauri Raj's amusing and touching anecdote about her quest to keep a plant alive in her Birmingham city-centre apartment. After many trials and errors, she has managed to find the perfect balance of conversation, socialisation and exercise that keeps her plant alive. Yes, you read that right, she takes her plant on walks, and her husband is tasked with the mission in her absence!

The evening was thoroughly relaxing and enjoyable and I don't think I was the only person to walk away still smiling.

Tell Me On A Sunday Jan 2013 pic 2I expect this month's Tell Me On A Sunday to be equally delicious in tale and story, and also in edible goodness! However, the evening will not be taking place in the usual venue of the Ikon Café, but instead in the fabulous gallery. This does mean that no tapas supper will be available before hand, but there will be tea and cake available. Who doesn't love a storytelling tea party on a Sunday?
