An unstoppable action thriller – narrated live and in 3D!

In a diminished world of screens and virtual-reality, join our resistance heroine as she sets out on a mission to break some glass and change the world.

Inspired by graphic novels and insurrectionist texts, A Thousand Shards of Glass combines an extraordinary solo performance, evocative sound design and a rich rhythmic text, to take you into a fantastical world. We're very excited to announce that Cuddles, by Joseph Wilde, will be produced by Ovalhouse and Arch 468 in May.Cuddles was one of three plays showcased at Capital Theatre Festival last year, and we're delighted that it's found a home at Ovalhouse.

Cuddles by Joseph Wilde
Directed by Rebecca Atkinson-Lord
14 May – 1 June 2013, 8pm

Box Office: 020 7582 7680
BOOK TICKETS

Eve is a 13 year old vampire. She has never left her room and everything she knows about the world and herself comes from what her sister Tabby has told her.

Eve lives in a world without sunlight. A world where Harry Potter, Bilbo Baggins and the cast of Dante's Inferno are real; where princes with adjectives instead of names seduce beautiful princesses against the odds. A world crammed full of story book characters but with just one living, breathing human being to cuddle.

Eve does everything a good little vampire girl should, including drinking her (human) sister's blood. But one day, Tabby tires of opening her veins and, in a breath, the whole world changes.

Cuddles is the stunning debut play from Capital award-winning young playwright Joseph Wilde.

Job Advert – amendment

Posted: 29 Mar 2013 05:26 AM PDT

Last week's published job advert for the Designers Formation was mistakenly listed as the Designers Forum. Full details again below:

Co-ordinator : The Designers Formation Ltd

We are looking for a dynamic forward thinking individual to undertake and develop the day to day and strategic running of The Designers Formation, the only agency in the UK exclusively representing theatre designers.

This role currently amounts to circa 16 hours per week of flexible working on a commission only basis ( averaging £5,500 to £8,250 per annum) and would suit someone working from their own base.

There is the possibility of building on this income in the potential future structure of the agency.

The role requires a motivated and innovative self-starter with excellent communicating and negotiating skills to work for and with a group of 12 individually talented designers to secure the best working terms and conditions for projects across all scales and spectrums of performance in the UK and abroad.

The role supports and is supported by a core committee of five experienced designers who are committed to building on the work of the current co-ordinator who has been in post since the founding of the agency 25 years ago. This post has arisen because the current co-ordinator has signalled her intention to retire.

We see this as an exciting opportunity to develop the future of the agency and ideally candidates should have strong face to face networking skills, the ability to produce and publish promotional material and to capture information relevant to the continually evolving nature of contemporary theatre practice.

While the role is currently based at the registered address of the agency in Nottingham, East Midlands, close  geographic proximity to this location is not necessarily a requisite of carrying out the role.

Arena Theatre Manager Retires

Posted: 29 Mar 2013 05:18 AM PDT

Kevin O'Sullivan, the manager of the University of Wolverhampton's Arena Theatre, is retiring at the end of April, after working at the theatre for the last 27 years.

Kevin joined the Arena as a technician after completing his degree at the University of Wolverhampton, becoming the Theatre Manager in 2000. Building on the legacy of the founder of the Arena, Philip Tilstone, Kevin has steered the Arena Theatre through more than 20 successful years of growth and development, with the continued support of the University of Wolverhampton and Arts Council England.

During Kevin's time at the theatre there has been a big increase in the number of professional, local groups and schools and colleges using the space, with the Arena progressing from one member of staff in 1985 presenting 20 shows a year, to ten members of staff servicing more than 200 shows a year in 2013.

Over the years, the Arena Theatre has become a well-loved venue on the small-scale touring circuit, providing vital support to local emerging artists and companies, including Stan's CafĂ©, Talking Birds and Little Earthquake.

Kevin has programmed an eclectic range of events that offer something for the whole community. This contributed to the Arena being awarded a 100% uplift in its regular funding from the Arts Council in 2011, particularly in recognition of its work in the community and disability arts.

Kevin O'Sullivan says, "I have enjoyed every minute of the last 27 years – I know we are doing the right thing when an audience comes out of the theatre smiling and talking about the show they have just seen. I'm confident that the legacy I have carried forward will be continued for many years."

Peter Robinson, Principal Lecturer and Head of Department for Leisure and The Arena Theatre, said: "Kevin has made an outstanding contribution to the University of Wolverhampton through his development of the Arena Theatre. The interesting, exciting and innovative programme which Kevin leaves as his legacy is a reflection of his insight and understanding of the role of The Arena in showcasing contemporary performing arts."

Kevin leaves the Arena in a strong position, supported by funders and partners and in the best place to attract new partners to support its wide range of work for local communities and audiences. Recruitment is underway for a new Venue Manager, with an announcement to be made in due course.

Artist Opportunity: Bradford

Posted: 29 Mar 2013 05:16 AM PDT

We are a performance collective based in Bradford and are curating a three day festival of art and performance in an empty shop in Bradford. Please find all details below. I have attached an image, however it is a portrait image.

"The free space of commodities is constantly being altered and redesigned in order to become ever more identical to itself, to get as close as possible to motionless monotony."

Retail has continually failed Bradford. Westfield's Broadway hole is testament to that, as are the many empty shops which line our streets.

To commemorate consumer capitalism's bloody dagger in the heart of Bradford, Official Culture present Free Space, a three day festival of work in a disused Broadway shop.

Beginning on Thursday 30th May, Free Space will celebrate the empty shop as a space for art and politics. We hope to include work across a number of disciplines, turning the store into a DIY gallery, installation and performance space.

We invite artists of all disciplines to apply to present their work as part of the festival. If you are interested in applying, you can download the brief and application form from the following link:

http://freespacefest.wordpress.com/

The deadline for applications is midday, 19th April.

Unfortunately as this project is unfunded, we are unable to offer a fee. We will however do our best to accommodate successful applicants.

More information will be added to the site in the coming weeks. If however you would like further details in the meantime, please contact us at contact@officialculture.com and we will try our best.

Free Space is supported by Fabric and The New Bradford Playhouse and curated by Official Culture

Leap of Faith- RoguePlay’s Outdoor Circus Theatre performance

Posted: 29 Mar 2013 05:13 AM PDT

RoguePlay theatre are creating a new piece of circus theatre for outdoor performance at the site of Sparkhill swimming baths entitled Leap of Faith.

RoguePlay use the skills of Capoeira, Static Trapeze, Contemporary Dance, acrobatics, live music, spoken word and even slacklining, to tell a wonderfully romantic and comical story of three women fed up with life and searching for peace. A chance meeting with a mysterious man helps them face their fears but ultimately they must all take their Leap of Faith alone.

The performances will be followed by FREE workshops in circus, by RoguePlay, and Graffiti workshops, by Soul City Arts, where you can design and create your own Graffiti baseball cap. Places for the graffiti workshops are on a first come first served basis as there are a limited number of baseball caps available.

The performance of Leap of Faith, will use the huge mural painted on the back of the building, by Mohammed Ali of Soul City Arts, as the inspiration for the piece and will be performed on the climbing frame in front of the mural.

13th and 14th April- performances at 12pm and 3pm. ENTRY FREE. Performances take place behind Sparkhill swimming baths, Court Road, Sparkhill, Birmingham, B11 4LX

The project, entitled Leap of Faith, is funded by the Birmingham City Council as part of their "Culture on your doorstep" scheme and in partnership with Soul City Arts.

Stage2’s The Tempest

Posted: 29 Mar 2013 05:11 AM PDT

Stage2's The Tempest

Wed 17th –Sat 20th April 2013 7.30 (+ Sat 2pm) at The Crescent Theatre, Brindleyplace, Birmingham.

After the success of Stage2's last show, the devised Alice's Adventures in Www.Land, Birmingham's busiest youth theatre is now taking on Shakespeare's The Tempest, a classic tale that will delight all ages.

An endless source of mystery and fascination to audiences, actors, students, poets, philosophers alike, The Tempest has been performed in more different ways and genres than any other work in the canon, if not the world. It is ideal for 'Stage2 style' plot twists and changes of characters' sex, making it not only a perfect first play, but an inspiring production for those studying the text (as it will inspire discussion and debate). Is it a pantomime, a fairy tale, a love story, an adventure, an allegory, a moral tale, or actually an elaborate game of chess? How much do we see mystical magic and how much skilled illusion? Is Prospero an Icarus or a Faustus? Who has the upper hand in this 'brave new world' – the native islanders or the educated voyagers? Where are our sympathies and do we know why? Physical action, slapstick comic routines, marvellous language, elegance, earthiness, deep sadness and conniving manipulation morph the story and drive the characters through a maze of increasing complexity, clashing fantasy and reality.

Stage2 youth theatre has a long established history of presenting clear, accessible (and 5 star) Shakespearian productions with dynamic casts of over 100 young people, and this show will be no exception.

'A team of talent, sublimely declining to put a foot wrong…. a first night standing ovation, then yet again Stage2 sent its audience home in grateful and heady disbelief, although old hands among the patrons know that this happens every time.' Behind the Arras. After last year's deep and dark Romeo and Juliet, here is a colourful show that all ages will enjoy (at least once the storm has settled….!)

Wed 17th –Sat 20th April 2013 7.30 (+ Sat 2pm) @ The Crescent Theatre. Tickets are £9. Tickets are selling fast, so book now!
