Generations: Thinking Straight and The Lasting Sense of Sudden

Posted: 08 Mar 2013 03:17 AM PST

Generations―a double bill of one act plays for the 2013 SHOUT Festival―opens this week at Birmingham's Custard Factory, and features a new play based on real life experiences collected by FRED through interviewing members of the LGBTQ community in Birmingham and the West Midlands. The Lasting Sense of Sudden will make you laugh, cry, become infuriated, and just so damn angry! It is a 60 minute roller coaster journey; a bitter sweet exploration of coming out, gaining acceptance, and learning to accept oneself in the twenty-first century. It's about how one fleeting moment may change lives forever, and reshape futures.

Performed by four actors who take on multiple roles, the play, written by Jonathan ap Emrys, moves quickly between a range of experiences. Some are positive, some are negative, some give cause for hope, and some are frightening.
Robert F. Ball, FRED's artistic director, says: "This has been a fascinating project to work on. From day one of interviewing people through to this week's dress rehearsals, it's been a privilege to work on what I believe is an important piece of theatre. We couldn't have brought these stories to the stage without the support of so many people, not least of all the SHOUT Festival, and we're extremely grateful to them.
"Together the two short plays show just how much has changed over the past forty years for the LGBTQ community, and at the same time how much remains the same. Whilst so much is immeasurably better nowadays, there is still prejudice, bigotry and hatred in some sections of society that needs to be tackled and irradiated now, not in another forty years. Perhaps our small contribution to the debate will help in a small way."

Call for Actors

Three passionate and accomplished playwrights seek foolhardy skilled and committed actors to embark on an adventurous new adventure that will bring dynamic wonderment (hopefully!) to the first ever 'Birmingham Fest' theatre festival, taking place in July 2013.

Frank Bramwell, Ian Kendall,Tim Wright:  Our mission as playwrights – and as people with a true passion for the theatre – is to challenge all of our preconceived notions of what a play should look and feel like, and work in close collaboration with actors and directors to bring about genuinely new and provocative theatrical experiences.

We are a new collective working with imaginative people who want to provide fantastic and unexpected things for the very first Birmingham Fest theatre festival.

Care to join us? Kick off Workshop taking place 9th March (afternoon)
