Theatre Fever: 9-24 March 2013

Posted: 01 Mar 2013 03:12 AM PST

Theatre Fever is a celebration of theatre made in the West Midlands, performed right across the region.

The West Midlands is a hotbed of creative theatrical talent and activity and we want to make a noise about it. For a lot of people theatre is a bug that you just can't shift once you catch it. Nationally, as many people watch live theatre as go to English Premiership and Football League matches combined*. Who would have thought it? It must be contagious.

In just two weeks there are over 30 Theatre Fever shows to see ranging from 80's toe tapping Footloose at Wolverhampton Grand to children's theatre in West Bromwich to new versions of the classic novels Lady Chatterley's Lover and Nineteen Eighty-Four in Birmingham.

There's also eight brand new, specially commissioned Theatre Fever shows. Some you can see in theatres, others will happen quickly and in places where you wouldn't expect. That includes the internet too! Take a look below at the shows that have been made possible thanks to Theatre Fever.

Argy Bhaji Arts & Women & Theatre present SOMETHING OUT OF THE ORDINARY
Bohdan Piasecki presents PALIMPSEST CITY

Open Space Event: The Invisible Army – How do we better support our independent producers?

Posted: 01 Mar 2013 03:02 AM PST

Open Space Event:
The Invisible Army. How do we better support our independent producers?

An open space event about independent producers and producing.
Proposed by Emily Coleman, Jo Hammett, Ruth Dudman and Lucy Moore on behalf of SOUPing*
With support from the Young Vic.
Hosted by Improbable.

There's been a surge in the number of exceptional people producing work independently, passionate individuals who are supporting an extraordinary number of artists whose work is reaching high numbers of audiences, across art forms and across the UK.

And yet this army of hardworking individuals can feel invisible. All too often independent producers are under valued and under paid with limited opportunities for professional development and support.

This is an invitation to people in all roles working in the arts to discuss in an open space format the role of independent producers – how can we create support mechanisms that enable us to grow, thrive and make work happen?  How can we share best practice?  How can we advocate for ourselves and articulate our value to the wider arts ecology?

We want to talk about independent producing with artists, audiences, venues, funders, so that we can put actions in place to support our work better.

We hope that you can make it.
See you soon,

Emily Coleman, Ruth Dudman, Jo Hammett and Lucy Moore
Emily (@EmColeman), Ruth (@ruthdudman), Jo (@Jojohammett) or Lucy (@moore_lucy)

Date: Wed 27 March
Time: 3:15pm for a 3:30pm start
Place: Young Vic, 66 The Cut, London, SE1 8LZ (nearest station Waterloo)
Cost: £6.00

Book your tickets HERE

*SOUPing is a simple recipe to increase knowledge, share skills and encourage camaraderie among independent producers.

The Young Vic have held a couple of events to bring producers together as an informal opportunity to meet, chat, share ideas and have a drink. They are testing the water to see if there is any interest in establishing a community/space/forum/network where producers might be able to connect with each other and share practice and ideas. The Young Vic Website
The evening runs using Open Space technology which gives anyone the chance to propose a starting point for discussion, then take part in one of these conversations, flit between them all, or head to the bar.

For further information or to discuss access requirements get in touch with the Improbable Office on 0207 240 4556 or email office@improbable.co.uk.

Hope to see you there.

RoguePlay Theatre’s performance of Blood Wedding

Posted: 01 Mar 2013 02:42 AM PST

RoguePlay have been busy developing an extract of Blood Wedding at Jackson's Lane theatre in London. Now they are bringing it back to Birmingham and performing the piece at their new home in Minerva works. (Unit 8, Minerva Works, 158 Fazeley Street, Digbeth, B5 5RT) on Thursday 14th March at 8pm
A tragedy in three acts, Lorca's Blood Wedding, pivots around the uneasy marriage of two villagers, against a violent backdrop of betrayal, family feuding and death. RoguePlay combines physical theatre with aerial circus as well as live music, whilst maintaining the use of much of the text itself to deliver Lorca's classic tale of passion, morality and vengeance. This performance is a half an hour extract of the piece and we are hoping to tour the full piece in 2014.

Tickets are £6 and can be booked via our website www.rogueplay.co.uk

Blood Wedding is supported by Arts Council England, Jackson's Lane Theatre and mac Birmingham
