The Barber Institute’s Writer In Residence Programme 2013

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 09:39 AM PST

The Barber Institute of Fine ArtsThe Barber Institute of Fine Arts is looking for a Writer In Residence for 2013. The scheme is in its third year and has previously featured writers Philip Monks and Andrew Killeen.

The Barber was founded in 1932 by Dame Martha Constance Hattie Barber in memory of her husband, Sir William Henry Barber. Housed in a Grade II listed Art Deco building designed by Robert Atkinson, it was officially opened by Queen Mary in 1939.

Featuring many of the greatest names in Western art, the Barber holds one of the most outstanding and internationally significant collections assembled in Britain during the 20th Century.

As well as around 150 major paintings and some stunning pastels and watercolours, the Barber is also home to more than 1,000 drawings and prints, a fine collection of sculpture including works by Degas and Roubiliac – decorative art and portrait miniatures. In addition, the Barber also has one of the finest collections of Roman, Byzantine and Medieval coins in the world.

Monet, Manet and Magritte; Renoir, Rubens, Rossetti and Rodin; Degas, Delacroix and Van Dyck- not to mention Botticelli, Poussin, Turner, Gainsborough, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Picasso, Hodgkin…You can see key works by all these and many more great artists in the galleries at the Barber Institute of Fine Arts. There's also a stunning coin gallery and an exciting programme of exhibitions, concerts, lectures, gallery talks, workshops and family activities.

A haven of tranquility in a bustling metropolis, the Barber Institute is a must for anyone visiting Birmingham and the West Midlands. No wonder that it has been described as 'one of the finest small art galleries in Europe'.

Dates: June – November 2013

Duration: Six months

Fee: £1600 (inclusive of all expenses).

The successful writer will:

  • Live in the West Midlands
  • Have a track record of publication or similar writing achievements that reflect both a high quality of relevant work and a significant commitment to writing as a professional activity.
  • Have an interest in fine arts.
  • Be confident working with the public and have experience running workshops, teaching or similar.
  • Be available on the specified dates.
  • Not, for the duration of the residency, be in residence elsewhere.

The role:

The aim of the scheme is to give a West Midlands writer the chance to respond to and engage with the impressive collections of fine art on display at the Barber, whilst allowing the Barber to offer some creative writing activity to visitors. The successful writer will be able to use the galleries as inspiration, wander the halls and, by negotiation, book office space in which to work.

The theme is portraiture; to look at how character, identity, status, appearance and costume are conveyed in paintings, sculpture, coins/medals, prints and drawings. This work will be used to highlight the Barber's 80th anniversary year.

The successful writer will be working with the general public in a series of writing workshops (minimum of 6) throughout the residency. These workshops will respond to the Barber's collections and will culminate in a final sharing event, held at the gallery, in which workshop participants and the resident writer will have the chance to read from their work.

In addition, some work with Barber Institute staff may be appropriate.

The successful writer will:

  • Run a minimum of six sessions with the public
  • Curate and present a public sharing event in partnership with Writing West Midlands, the region's literature development agency.
  • There may be additional opportunities for writing to be displayed within the collections themselves.

How To Apply:

  • Send a covering letter and writing CV to Sara Beadle, Programmes Director, Writing West Midlands, explaining your interest in the role and what you think you could bring to it, by Thursday 25th April 2013. Postal and email addresses are below.

  • Shortlisted writers may be asked to send further examples of their work and/or attend an interview.
