Matt is coming home !!

Posted: 09 Mar 2013 05:08 AM PST

You may recall our article last month asking everyone to vote on the Culture 24 site to bring Matt Collinshaw to Nottingham, well we now have the results and… yes, Matt is coming to the Backlit Gallery (well done to the Backlit Gallery).

The art lovers in Nottingham really got behind the Backlit campaign to 'bring back Mat' and won a national online public vote by a staggering 45%.

Backlit in Sneinton was one of four venues in with a chance of a visit from Mat Collishaw as part of the national competition Connect10 which saw a total of 38 venues going head-to-head to host one of 10 successful artists at the Museums at Night 2013 festival.

Mat Collishaw is a critically acclaimed artist working predominantly in photography and is one of the Young British Artists – a group of artists including Tracy Emin and Damien Hurst. He was born in Nottingham and attended Trent Polytechnic, now Nottingham Trent University, between 1985 and 1986, before he graduated with a BA in Fine Art from Goldsmiths College London in 1989.

Matthew Chesney, founder and director of Backlit, said: "We are absolutely thrilled that we won this competition and stunned that we won by 45%. It's incredible and I want to thank the people of Nottingham who really got behind this campaign.

"Mat Collishaw is an internationally renowned artist whose home town is Nottingham. It is brilliant that he will return here.  He is one of the most successful contemporary artists to have come out of Nottingham and it will be an honour for us to have him here. Not only will the visit help raise the profile of Backlit but it will be great for the whole city to have Mat come to Nottingham again, as he has never exhibited in his home city as far as I know."

Well we are really looking forward to seeing the work in May, and will keep you posted on details.
