The Bingo Caller (New Play Premiere)

Posted: 12 Apr 2013 03:01 AM PDT

By Stephen Jackson
Studio Theatre, Hall Green Little Theatre  25th – 27th April 2013
All tickets £8
A local play, a local writer, and a local actor – The Bingo Caller hits the stage at Hall Green Little Theatre later this month with Marcus Hendry in the title role.
"It's a terrific part," says Marcus of the role. "The audience play bingo as the bingo caller disintegrates on stage. He has been sacked after 23 years. He is calling his last game of bingo – and he has a lot to get off his chest. It's a tragi-comedy – the portrait of a man in crisis.
"There are lots of laughs, a few tears – and a game of bingo. What more could an audience want?!"
Local writer Stephen Jackson is better known as a cartoonist and as the creator of the children's book Mirrorworld. This will be the first time his exciting new play has been performed. He has previously been shortlisted for the International Playwriting Festival and the Keats-Shelley Prize for Poetry.
"There's not much poetry in The Bingo Caller – but there are some laughs. It would be wonderful if a homegrown play could go on to be a success."  Hglt will be launching a new writers' group from the end of this month to build upon the success of this new play.
The play is suitable for audiences from 14+ and runs for three nights: Thursday, Friday and Saturday April 25th-27th.  All tickets are £8.00 and are available online at www.hglt.co.uk or by phone on 0121 707 1874.  Hall Green Little Theatre is on Pemberley Road, Acocks Green Birmingham B27 7RY

The Arena is pleased to continue its strand of the very best in

Posted: 12 Apr 2013 02:56 AM PDT

The Arena is pleased to continue its strand of the very best in new theatre this season by welcoming Birmingham's Babakas to the theatre for the first time on 18 April, with their play Our Fathers.

Our Fathers is a daring leap across oceans and decades, led by three performers whose far-away fathers might just make an appearance! It takes inspiration from stand-up comedy, contemporary dance, video installation and The Sopranos to create a moving, unforgiving tribute to fathers everywhere who tried to do their best.

Our Fathers is performed by Babakas, which formed in 2010 and is an international theatre company based in Birmingham. Babakas is led by Mike Tweddle, who is also the Artistic Director of BE Festival, a festival of European performance that takes place in Birmingham every July (www.befestival.org).

The Arena has already hosted some brilliant new work this season, including plays by Pigeon Theatre, Black Fish, Kate Tempest and Kindle Theatre.

Tickets for Our Fathers cost £9 Full Price and £7 Concessions and are available on the Arena website www.arenatheatre.info, by phoning the Box Office on 01902 32321 or by visiting the Box Office on Wulfrun Street.

Stan’s Cafe: Of All The People… 10th Anniversary Homecoming

Posted: 12 Apr 2013 02:49 AM PDT

Two Snowhill Birmingham & Stan's Cafe present:
Of All The People In All The World - 10th Anniversary Homecoming
  • 23 tonnes of rice to be installed in biggest new UK office development outside of London ·
  • 12-21 April 2013, Two Snowhill, Birmingham. Admission Free ·

Birmingham-based theatre company Stan's Cafe's celebrate the 10th anniversary of their famed performance piece, Of All The People In All The World, with a very special return to the city.

Recently wowing Australian audiences at the Perth International Arts Festival, the free to visit show, which straddles the line between theatre and art, can be seen at Two Snowhill, Birmingham, from Friday 12 to Sunday 21 April 2013.

Both monumental and moving, Of All The People In All The World uses grains of rice to represent individual people and through carefully measured piles, communicates human population statistics in a direct and powerful way.

These statistics, including country and city populations, people being born and dying each day and commuters passing through Snow Hill station, tell the daily, changing story of the planet's inhabitants. Twenty three tonnes of rice – representing 1.5 billion people – will be shipped into Two Snowhill for the event.

Conceived by James Yarker, Stan's Cafe's founder and artistic director was inspired to create a meaningful way to bring incomprehensible statistics to life after observing how we often struggle to truly grasp huge numbers.

Since debuting in 2003, the show has been seen in over 50 cities world-wide, from Adelaide, Buenos Aires, Bucharest and Barcelona, to Washington, Tokyo, Toronto and Zurich, via Los Angeles, Copenhagen and New York. Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett, music legend Lou Reed and Prince Charles are among the 250,000 people who've visited the show.

The 10th Anniversary Homecoming performance has been commissioned by property developers Hines and Ballymore to mark the opening of Two Snowhill.

Situated in the heart of Birmingham city centre, the 14-storey, 310,000sq ft building is the biggest new UK office development to be built outside of London since the start of the recession. Taking up the entire sixth floor, the 10-day anniversary collaboration allows unique public access to the landmark building before it's occupied.

"After a decade of touring the world with the show we are excited to be celebrating its anniversary in such a spectacular venue with amazing views over our home city," said James Yarker. "We hope to welcome people of all ages from all walks of life to this show, which is about us all and the world we share."

Anthony Leonard, director of Hines, said: "Traditionally, office buildings are off limits to anyone but their owners and tenants. At Two Snowhill we are delighted to be able to work with Stan's Cafe to welcome the public into the building."

Richard Probert, commercial sales and letting manager (UK) for Ballymore, said: "Two Snowhill is one of the best specified buildings outside London. We are hugely proud of it and want to celebrate the latest addition to Birmingham's skyline."

  • Of All The People In All The World runs from Friday 12 to Sunday 21 April 2013 at Two Snowhill, Snow Hill Queensway, Birmingham B4 6GA. Open Mon-Fri 11am-7pm, Sat/Sun 11am-6pm. Admission free. For more information, see:www.stanscafe.co.uk
