The Sunset Lounge - Open Mic

Posted: 16 Apr 2013 08:24 AM PDT

Thursday is the new Friday!

Beanbags and cushions, lava lamps and disco balls, joss sticks, sarongs and candles.

What more could you ask for on a Thursday night?

Oh ya, loads of musicians (mostly) come and play some sweet tunes too. When you step inside the back room of the Cannon you’ll forget that you’re in one of the oldest pubs in Newport Pagnell. You'll also forget that it used to be a gay bar. Did it? Or is this just a myth?
General information
Here's how to do it...

1) Book Friday morning off work.

2) Go to the Cannon in Newport Pagnell anytime from 8pm on a Thursday (park around the back) MK16 8AQ. Go directly to the back room and look for the beardy dude! Turn up before 8.30 to guarentee a slot. Bring your electro-acoustic instrument. (We have a guitar you can borrow if you don't have one!)

3) Tune up your guitar and make sure the battery works. We need a quick change over between musicians.

4) Tell Jeff, Ade or Gareth to put your name in the 'Magical Book'. They'll know what you mean.

5) Sit back, relax and wait your turn. (Don't pester Jeff or he'll cut you........ from the list and, well, don't pester him).

6) Get on stage, have a joke ready if it's your first time at the SSL then play.

*3 songs, no medleys or longwinded stories about how you were feeling when you wrote the song.

*Acts may get more or less time on stage depending on the number of acts wanting to play. If you go overtime we'll shoot you. Or turn your music down. Which ever we're in the mood for.

Hope that's comprehensive enough for you Loungers! Now you know and knowing is half the battle!

The SSL crew.

‘Both funny and tightly put together… a swaggering debut.’ ★★★★ Guardian

’David Trent bursts on to the Fringe with ballsy, bold and intense hour of inventive, tech-heavy comedy that’s smart and dumb in equal measure.’ ★★★★ Chortle

The Stables - M1 Music Night: Jimmy Brewer Band

M1 Music Night: Jimmy Brewer Band

Date: Fri 19 Apr 2013, 8:45pm

Public Price: £10 in advance, £12 on the door

Venue: Stage 2

Jimmy Brewer is a songwriter, a guitar player and a singer, but he is not your typical sad acoustic troubadour. He has the power to silence a room with little more than an intro. He captures an audience and takes them on an emotional rollercoaster ride, leaving them exhausted, amazed and fulfilled. Growing up he found inspiration amongst his parents’ record collection. His early influences such as the Rolling Stones and The Beatles are still perhaps the most important, but with the addition of the old school sounds of Nat King Cole and Fats Domino through to the more contemporary styling of Jeff Buckley, the quirkiness of David Bowie, the wit of Jerry Reed and the imagination of Tom Waits. This diverse range of influences is very much in evidence on his debut album As Time Stands Still demonstrating that the craft of classic songwriting is still very much alive and well.

Brian Houston and Robert Vincent

Date: Sun 21 Apr 2013, 8:45pm

Public Price: £10 in advance, £12 on the door

Venue: Stage 2

The irrepressible Brian Houston encapsulates the spirit that makes independent music so important. Never releasing the same album twice, his music is as surprising as it is honest and joyful. From its opening gospel moans and brass stabs his new album Shelter is rocked up to the limit with guitar playing to die for. Robert Vincent is a searingly honest Liverpool singer-songwriter whose mix of folk, rock and country is like a Mersey Van Morrison or a Scouse Springsteen.

Spiers & Boden: The Backyard Songs Tour

Date: Tue 23 Apr 2013, 8:00pm

Public Price: £16.50

Venue: Jim Marshall Auditorium

Described as “the finest instrumental duo on the traditional scene” and winners of the BBC Radio 2 folk award for Best Duo, founders of folk big-band Bellowhead, Jon Spiers (melodeon, concertina) and Jon Boden (voice, fiddle, guitar, stompbox) have made the genre of spontaneous, punky English folk very much their own stomping ground. Loud, proud, and with just a few acoustic instruments, they create a multitude of textures upon which they present traditional stories and dance music. For this tour fans are invited to suggest folk gems with Milton Keynes significance that John and Jon can learn and perform at the gig, whether it be a traditional song collected nearby or a dance tune associated with the area
