Fine Art students to take part in Ballard Arts Festival in Lincoln May 2013

The Ballard Art Festival will inhabit various locations around central Lincolnduring the start of May. It consists of 6 exhibitions of artworks by 2nd year Fine Art students from the University of Lincoln's School of Art and Design. Each exhibition features newly created artworks in response to different novels by J.G. Ballard, which also provide the titles of the exhibitions. The different exhibitions are listed below:

RUSHING TO PARADISE
Venue: The Pyewipe Inn, Saxilby Road, Lincoln, LN1 2BG

The idea of utopia is a goal often striven for and rarely attained. Throughout history the dream has been attempted but never fulfilled. The striving for perfection often leads to the breaking down of the original ideal, leading to dystopia. Rushing to Paradiseis an exhibition seeking to explore the relationship between utopia and dystopia and the breaking down of an ideal whilst taking inspiration from J.G Ballard's book of the same name.

MILLENNIUM PEOPLE
Venue: Stokes of Lincoln Coffee and Tea Warehouse, Mint Lane, Lincoln, LN1 1UD

Based around the revolutionary nature of The Millennium People; we aim to redefine the expected nature of traditional art exhibitions.
Through intervention and audience participation, the show will provide the opportunity for the audience to determine the narrative of the show, which depending on their choice, could lead to something provocative and revolutionary.


THE UNLIMITED DREAM COMPANY
Venue: The Diocesan President, Mothers' Union Centre, St. Benedict's Square, Lincoln, LN5 7AR and also at The Greyfriars, Broadgate, Lincoln, LN2 1HQ

The Unlimited Dream Company is holding a mysterious and controversial exhibition. The projects ambitions are to involve the community with the interaction of art based on the book 'The Unlimited Dream Company' by J.G Ballard.
The show will focus on the metamorphic thread of the storyline by developing a coherent display of performance, film and static art pieces. For the performance, exotic masks will be created.


THE CRYSTALWORLD
Venue: Sir Joseph Banks Conservatory, The Lawn, Union Road, Lincoln, LN1 3BL

Inspired by the voyage of Sir Joseph Banks and the adventurous and mysterious novel, 'The Crystal World' by J. G. Ballard, 10 emerging artists aim to encapsulate the sense of discovery, adventure and enthrallment within the Sir Joseph Banks conservatory- tropical garden within Lincoln city. With reference to the novel- site specific sculpture, installation and photography will evoke exploration and reconnaissance during a time when the blank pages of the map have already been filled.

EMPIRE OF THE SUN, FREEDOM FROM FEAR
Venue: The Platform, Tower Bar, Brayford Pool, Lincoln.

Artists: Charlotte Brooks, Jess Bridges, Ellis Charman, Vic Hill, Stacey Hudson, Sarah Middleton, Emily Musgrave, Shannon Phillips, Ashleigh Robson, Rachael Senior & Annabel Walker

Inspired by the novelist J.G Ballard's, 'Empire of the Sun – Freedom from Fear' is an exhibit curated by 11 artists from the University of Lincoln. The exhibition explores the themes of overcoming the fear of losing the life you once knew, through destruction caused by war and also the separations from family and stability. Held at the Platform at Tower Bar, the audience is invited to explore the interpretations of the book and the nostalgia of being thrown back in time.

THE WIND FROM NOWHERE
Venue Held in an abandoned arcade on Norman Street (off Sincil Street)

Artists: Lauren Beet, Rebecca Edgar, Gemma Green, Chris Houghton, Rory Olver & Nichola Pierpoint.

'The Wind From Nowhere' is an artist led exhibition curated by six students from The University of Lincoln. Inspired by J.G.Ballard's novel, the exhibition will explore notions of destruction and deterioration; pushing the boundaries of nature through a variety of mediums. The viewer will develop an understanding of a derelict world.
