Sign of Creative Spring? – Syson Gallery Opens

Halfway through April and not much sign of daffodills round here, but my heart was cheered by the sight of a new gallery in the creative Quarter: Syson Gallery last week. Located on Beck Street, it is just past the corner shop with the lovely bath in the window on the way to Antenna. Founded by the eponymous Jennie Syson, it was staffed by Jenny Gleadell on the day I visited last week.

The opening exhibition, Out of This World, Part 1, includes pieces from John Newling (you may have seen his work at Nottingham Contemporary recently), Geoff Diego Litherland, Candice Jacobs, Alexander Stevenson, Bruce Asbestos, and Yelena Popova. Yelena was one of our Guest Bloggers in 2011, and we covered one of her London exhibitions in August of that year.

I enjoyed looking around this refurbished Victorian shop building which nicely displays the artists' work on the ground and first floors. It may be a sign of a youth mis-spent with early computers but my favourites of the current display were the Riso-prints of Candice Jacobs, drawings made up of symbols found on a computer keyboard – ASCII art, version 2.

The gallery is a commercial space, everything is for sale. They are open only Wednesday to Sunday, noon to 5pm. Part 2 of their Out of This World launches on 2 May. I shall certainly pay them another visit – a welcome addition to the Nottingham scene.
