Birmingham Opera Company marks silver jubilee with new opera

Posted: 09 Feb 2012 05:09 AM PST

Birmingham Opera Company
Presents
Life is a Dream by Jonathan Dove with writer Alasdair Middleton
Directed by Graham Vick
Conducted by William Lacey
World Premiere: Wednesday 21st March 2012, 7 performances between 21st – 31st March 2012

2012 marks 25 years of creating innovative, internationally acclaimed opera productions for Graham Vick and the award-winning Birmingham Opera Company. Graham Vick, who yesterday, 7th February 2012, received an honorary degree from Birmingham City University recently unveiled his latest project, a brand new opera, Life is a Dream which will have its world premiere in the city on 21st March 2012 at the Argyle Works, Digbeth, with seven performances between 21st – 31st March 2012 (www.birminghamopera.org.uk)

Life is a Dream, based on the famous Spanish play by 17th century playwright Caldéron de la Barca has been commissioned from leading British composer Jonathan Dove with writer Alasdair Middleton. Directed by Graham Vick, it will feature an international cast headed by American baritone Eric Greene in his UK debut, with returning cast member acclaimed British tenor Paul Nilon and tenor Joseph Guyton who was recently voted third in the German X Factor final. They will be supported by a vast chorus and acting company drawn from the local community in the West Midlands.

In what is heralded globally as a unique approach to opera, Birmingham Opera Company engages around 200 people of different ages, faiths, cultures, education, social background and professions for each production. From vicars to venture capitalists and hip hop performers to HR managers, the Birmingham Opera Company chorus members, many of whom have never sung or performed before, come together for an intensive timetable of regular rehearsals and workshops in the weeks leading up to the performances, resulting in ground-breaking productions that consistently achieve critical acclaim and are often credited with 'changing lives' for those participating in them.

As usual, all of Birmingham's a stage for Birmingham Opera Company with the striking temporary conjuring of a warehouse, ice rink or disused Birmingham building into a glamorous one-off set. Life Is a Dream will be no exception with a site-specific production designed by Samal Blak who was behind 2009's dramatic transformation of the Digbeth former factory for the company's globally acclaimed production of Othello which was broadcast by BBC2 in February 2011.

Life is a Dream tells the story of a royal son Segismund imprisoned from birth by his father King Basil. The King who predicts the future and reads the stars has prophesied that his son will kill him and wreak havoc on his kingdom. When Segismund's mother dies in childbirth King Basil locks his son away to never see the light of day, forever to be punished for crimes he has not yet committed.

Years later King Basil gives Segismund the chance to prove his father wrong. For one day only, Segismund is to sit on the throne. If Life is a Dream perhaps Segismund can make his own ending. Against all the odds and everyone's fears, perhaps he can make good....

Two years in the making this new opera has been developed with input from a group of Birmingham volunteers who have formed a unique sounding board for the creators.

Jean Nicholson, General Manager of Birmingham Opera Company said: "In our Jubilee year, we are delighted to be collaborating once again with Jonathan Dove, one of the UK's leading classical composers. Jonathan's relationship with the company goes back to the company's infancy when he worked with the City of Birmingham Touring Opera. To welcome him back with this exciting new production and a world premiere for Birmingham is a fitting celebration to mark twenty five years of Birmingham Opera Company".

Fierce Festival turns Birmingham inside out and upside down

Posted: 15 Feb 2012 04:00 PM PST

Fierce Festival, Birmingham's premier live art and performance festival, returns for eleven days this March and April. Performers from around the world will converge on Birmingham to bring boundary-pushing performances and art installations to venues and unusual spaces across the city, including the Brutalist Central Library, the city's warehouses, backstage at Symphony Hall and the underbelly of Spaghetti Junction.

Dachshunds from across the country will congregate in Birmingham for Dachshund U.N., Bennett Miller's playful reproduction of the United Nations populated by sausage dogs, taking place outside Ikon Gallery during the festival's opening weekend.

Inspired by Farenheit 451, volunteer performers in Mette Edvardsen's Time Has Fallen Asleep in the Afternoon Sunshine have committed entire novels to memory. Audiences will be able to discover 'human books' residing amongst the shelves in Bimingham's soon to be demolished Central Library, who will recite passages of the books by heart in a delicate one-on-one performance.

Celebrate Symphony Hall's 21st Anniversary at Curious Sounds in Curious Spaces, a day of ear-opening musical performances, sound experiments and workshops suitable for all the family.  The foyers and backstage areas in Symphony Hall will be buzzing with the sound of vintage computer games, Speak & Spells, cardboard instruments and a symphony created by the audience's mobile phones.

Adventurous audience members can sign a night of their life away to Fierce and Capsule with the mysterious Secret Show. After being picked up from a central Birmingham location, you will be blindfolded and whisked away to a top secret venue for an evening you will never forget…

Get a totally different view of Spaghetti Junction in Track, a moveable participatory installation by Graeme Miller where audiences will be moved horizontally along a track. Gazing upwards from beneath the the iconic interchange, participants will undergo a solitary, immersive experience as the railways, canals, rivers and pipelines pass by.

This year's Fierce Festival also includes two huge parties hosted by remarkable performance artists. Birmingham-based Harminder Singh Judge transforms Club PST into a landscape inspired by the film The Holy Mountain. The club night will feature special live performances alongside music from enigmatic international star Oni Ayhun.

Coventry boy Daniel Lismore's outrageous and opulent London club night Shabba Dabba Da heads to the Midlands for a very special Easter edition.  The night will take over the loft space at Birmingham's legendary Q Club. Expect high fashion DIY costume mash-ups, cross-dressing choirboys and twisted Madonnas.

Finally, take an alternative Easter pilgrimage with a co-ordinated city walk from artist Hamish Fulton.

Explore the highs and lows of love and romance with works including an emotional tour of Berlin on the streets of Birmingham (Berlin Love Tour), Uninvited Guests' Love Letters Straight From Your Heart  (fresh from a sell-out run at London's Southbank Centre) in which love song dedications from the audience are woven into the performance, and Cupid – a meditation on fate, chance and destiny using archery and plaster-of-paris hearts.

Film bug to spread across Colmore Business District

Posted: 29 Feb 2012 04:00 PM PST

Colmore Business District (CBD) has partnered with innovative film festival, Flatpack, to bring independent cinema to the city's professional quarter in March.

Film Bug will be taking place in CBD from Wednesday 14th to Friday 16th March as part of the five day long Flatpack Festival, which will be returning for the sixth time. A festival within a festival, Film Bug will have screenings in a variety of venues in the district including Birmingham Cathedral, Birmingham & Midland Institute as well as cafes, pubs and bars.

Film Bug will commence on the evening of 14th March with Another Fine Mess at Birmingham Cathedral, an evening of silent comedy short films including Laurel & Hardy. Live accompaniment will come from acclaimed pianist Neil Brand, known for his work on BBC Radio 4's The Film Programme and Paul Merton's Silent Clowns.

Venues throughout the commercial district will hold a selection of short programmes, feature films and live performances during the three day event; the majority of the screenings are free of charge. A highlight of the programme will be the opportunity to see Mercury Music Prize nominee Kit Downes performing a live score to animations by illustrator and filmmaker Lesley Barnes.

A walking tour of CBD will take place on Thursday 15th March to complement the Film Bug programme, where local historian Ben Waddington will explore unexpected aspects of Birmingham's involvement in cinema history.

CBD board director, Diane Benussi said,

"We are delighted to bring an excellent programme of films to everyone in Colmore Business District. Film Bug will provide a bespoke schedule of screenings at CBD's superb range of venues and provide something different at lunchtimes and after work. We're proud to partner with Flatpack Festival, a renowned cultural event in the city."

Ian Francis, Flatpack Festival director commented,

"Flatpack Festival is all about taking film to unexpected places and this partnership with Colmore Business District has been a great opportunity for us to explore some new corners of the city. Whether it be animation, silent comedy or live jazz scores, Film Bug packs into a couple of days a taste of all the fantastic film activity that goes on in Birmingham through the year and most of it is free so there's no excuse not to dip in and try a few things out."

The full Flatpack Festival programme information and tickets are now available at www.flatpackfestival.org.uk.
