Please see below for more details. I am looking for expertise in relation to urban regeneration, both in general terms but also specifically about Birmingham in the period 1950-1975.The University of Lincoln is host to the Media Archive for Central England (MACE). Together with the MACE team, I am developing an archive-led DVD around the theme of urban regeneration in Birmingham.A significant section of this will be based around the redevelopment (and modernisation) of Birmingham City Centre around the period 1955 - 1975, a development much maligned in later decades (and to this day).A key premise and aim of the DVD will be to reconsider this period by presenting the archival record of the challenges faced by city planners and architects and the solutions they came up with - particularly the focus on vehicle access, the 'vertical city' and population relocation (particularly to high-rise and/or the suburbs). It is also the intention that the project places this in the context of contemporary problems associated with the significant shift towards suburbanisation - both in relation to living but also commerce, industry, transport, etc. - and the impact this has had on the purpose and function of the 'traditional' city centre.
