18 March - Classical at Town Hall

Haydn's chief biographer, H. C. Robbins Landon, wrote that this Mass in D minor 'is arguably Haydn's greatest single composition'. It was completed in the summer of 1798, a terrifying time for Austria, and given the title Missa in angustiis ('Mass for Troubled Times'). What Haydn did not know at the time — but what he and his audience had heard by the date of the first performance (15 September) – is that on 1 August Napoleon had been dealt a stunning defeat at the Battle of the Nile by British forces led by Admiral Horatio Nelson. This is why the Mass became known as the 'Nelson' Mass.

18 March - Classical at Birmingham Conservatoire

Showcasing the talents of LGBT musicians from around the Midlands, this concert allows the audience to get close-and-personal as groups formed from within the orchestra get a chance to perform in the intimate setting of the Recital Hall. The BGSO is one of only two LGBT orchestras in the UK, and one of only a handful from around the world. The orchestra has a reputation for presenting popular classics and lesser-known gems to a wide audience, with their own individual brand of energy and fun!

This 90 minute walking tour has many tales of con artists, soap queens, musical legends, game show kings and even throws in a phantom flan flinger for good measure. Join Mark on a discovery of the city's rich TV & Movie past, present & future.
