Bramhall Music Building Tour at Bramhall Music Building, The University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, B15 2TU

April 27, 2012 from 2:30pm to 5pm
Led by Glenn Howells of Glenn Howells Architects, this tour offers a unique opportunity to gain an insight into a prominent local example of construction within the constraints of historic settings. The Bramall Music Building at University of Birmingham is a state-of-the-art concert venue with supporting performance spaces and practice and teaching rooms. It will be home to the university's Department of Music. The building completes the Aston Webb semicircle at the heart of the university campus, its design taking reference from the adjacent domed buildings that date back to the early 1900s when the university was founded.Principles from the Grade II-listed semicircle, which include the university's Great Hall and landmark clock tower, have been incorporated and updated in the Glenn Howells Architects' design, resulting in a thoroughly modern building that reflects its historic setting.Modern construction methods were employed by the team to deliver the project on time and budget. Meeting today's environmental requirements has also impacted on the design and construction process. This tour is restricted to 20 delegates. Please book early to avoid disappointment. The group will gather from 2.30pm, with the tour starting promptly at 3pm and finishing with tea and coffee from around 4.30 - 5pm.See More

31 March - Spoken Word at Birmingham Cathedral

FREE

VIVID is inviting people from Birmingham to take part in a collective recitation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights with artist Monica Ross. Take this chance to learn a small part of the Declaration of Human Rights and recite it in public, in your own language, as part of this unique performance. Everyone is welcome and we hope that the recitation will fully reflect the many voices and languages of Birmingham's communities.

We wish to include many speakers and are interested in hearing Articles from the Declaration memorised and recited in many different languages including British Sign Language. To become involved this does not mean you have to be a experienced performer as the emphasis is not on perfect recall, but on the attempt to remember and the difficulty of fulfilling the Declaration's call to keep it 'constantly in mind,' especially when under pressure. If you, your group, or organisation would like to take part in this project, please express your interest by emailing Nicola Lowery or calling VIVID on 0121 766 7876.

Event Details:

A discussion between two leading contemporary novelists accompanies a cinema screening of two artists' films: Mika Rottenberg's Squeeze paired with Ryan Trecartin's K-CoreaINC.K.

Kitamura and Kunzru will address the issues at play in the work of both artists: from the body, personal identity and performance to systems, capitalism and affective and precarious labour. They will discuss how the concerns of contemporary art are shared by their own contemporary fiction: power, submission, and gender roles in the case of Kitamura, and the play of global networks and social forces in the shaping of contemporary identity in the case of Kunzru. They draw on these ideas, and on their knowledge of the work of both artists, as well as the content of a lengthy interview with Ryan Trecartin, published in edited form in a recent issue of Frieze magazine.

Chaired by Phil Leonard, Reader in Literary Studies and Critical Theory, NTU and Abi Spinks, Assistant Curator, Nottingham Contemporary

Nottingham Contemporary's public programme is jointly funded by Nottingham Trent University and The University of Nottingham.
