Berlin 1936 and Tokyo 1964, two Olympic moments bracketing the politics of Second World War - from the institution of Nazism to the legacy of Japan's collaboration. Dolores Martinez will look at the iconic, state-commissioned films that documented each: Leni Riefenstahl's Olympia and Kon Ichikawa's Olympiad. Both films raise a question of continuing significance: how is it possible for documentary films to embody both aesthetic principles and principles that represent the political position of the state?

At the 1972 Munich Olympics, terrorist group Black September took 11 members of the Israeli Olympic team hostage. Attempts to negotiate ended in disaster – the death of all hostages, five terrorists and a German policeman. The history of how this happened, and who was to blame, is long-contested; a lack of certain answers to questions of truth and responsibility lie at the heart of Morris' film - the narration of which is provided by an interview with Georg Sieber, psychologist and police adviser to the security team of the 1972 Munich Olympics.

Event Details:

"What compels these men to attack? Why are men so disturbed by this spectacle? Why do they get involved so entirely? Why this needless fighting? What is sport?"
In 1961, philosopher Roland Barthes collaborated with filmmaker Hubert Aquin to produce a film, for Canadian television, intended to reveal the poetics of sport and spectatorship.  The question 'what is sport' is answered by Barthes's eloquently scripted commentary. The recurring theme of purging violence from society into the spectacle of sport runs through the film.

Introduced by Professor Murray Pratt, Nottingham Trent University
