An irresistibly mysterious engineering student arrives and yields each member of his wealthy Milanese host family to his seductions. Upon his abrupt departure, the family experiences an unavoidable vacuum, embarking on a series of obscene lifestyle changes in order to deal with their loss. At the time, the film was praised for its refreshing depiction of European dissenters towards the state, with a suspicious tone towards the mysterious persuasions of religion.

All That Heaven Allows

Selected by current exhibitor Daria Martin

Friday 23 March / 6.30pm / £5 (concessions £3)

Jane Wyman is a repressed wealthy widow and Rock Hudson is the hunky Thoreau-following gardener who loves her in Douglas Sirk’s heartbreakingly beautiful indictment of 1950s small-town America. Sirk utilises expressionist colours, reflective surfaces, and frames-within-frames to convey the loneliness and isolation of a matriarch trapped by the snobbery of her children and the gossip of her social-climbing country club chums.
