Composer seeks 26 musicians to perform in Guitar Orchestra at MK Gallery this summer

A Milton Keynes-based composer/guitarist has issued a call out for 26 guitarists to participate in the UK première of his first major composition written for 26 guitars and drums.

Peter J Taylor's composition Music for 26 Guitars received its first public airing in 2009 at the ARS Electronic music festival in Linz, Austria, while it was European Capital City of Culture.  The piece will be performed at MK Gallery, Milton Keynes on 10 August, as part of a dynamic season of events forming part of the gallery's summer exhibition MK Calling (28 June – 8  September 2013), showcasing  emerging and established talent.

Taylor (b1983) currently composes for multiple guitars and has performed and played with hundreds of musicians internationally.  His work might be described as sounding comparable to that of the American composers and avant-garde guitarists Rhys Chatham and Glenn Branca.  Using extended techniques, custom tunings and adaptive notation, Taylor's music explores the harmonies of micro-tonal change. Making music for specific locations and with a touring ensemble, it is adaptable and challenging to both the participating musicians and the listeners.  Speaking of the forthcoming event, Taylor said, 'I'm really excited at the prospect of presenting this work in Milton Keynes. The work requires at least two days of rehearsal before the event and I'm looking for musicians who can follow staff notation, provide their own amplification (with sufficient volume) and a reliable tuner."

Anyone interested in taking part in this event should contact Simon Wright, Events Manager at MK Gallery in the first instance on 01908 676 900 or email swright@mkgallery.org
