This workshop with Mike Spike is for beginners who have a digital SLR camera and are not confident in using it, or for those wishing to make better use of their phone camera.

In the morning, we will experiment with composition,  practice photography techniques, help with skills as we will take pictures of indoor studies.

After a light lunch ( included in the workshop cost ), we will then go outside in the afternoon taking pictures on your cameras along the river and in the historic town of Stony Stratford, followed by discussion and critic of favourite shots.

You should bring your camera with you, some examples of your photographs (if you wish) and also, your camera's instruction manual ( just in case some settings need to be changed! ).

These workshops are limited to a maximum of only 6 people so you can be sure you will receive the individual attention and personal support that you need. Book your place here.

Raku Workshop at Westbury Arts Centre

Posted: 17 Jun 2013 09:40 AM PDT

Raku Workshop  *Independent Workshop hosted at Westbury Arts Centre.

22 June 2013 // Day workshop (Contact Kirsteen or Mark for times)

Tutors – Kirsteen Holuj & Mark Compton

Westbury Arts Centre, Foxcovert Rd, Shenley Wood, Milton Keynes, MK5 6AA.

See Kirsteen and Mark's blog for more details and workshop dates/times. www.mkraku.blogspot.co.uk

Raku is a firing process developed in 16th century Japan for the Japanese tea ceremony. The pieces are glazed, dried and put directly into a hot kiln where they remain for about thirty minutes until the glazes have melted at a temperature of 1000°c.

The piece is then removed from the gas fired kiln with long raku tongs and put into a nest of sawdust and covered with a metal cover creating a reduction chamber. This reduction atmosphere changes the molten glaze to produce the wonderful lustrous and crackle glazes associated with Raku Pottery. Raku firing is dramatic and exciting.

It's also a wonderful way to actually watch the glazes melt and see what happens inside the kiln with your own eyes.

You may bring your own bisque fired pots or small sculptures (please contact us for information on the best clays to use for raku). Alternatively you can purchase pots and dishes that we make for the workshops on the day.

Tea, coffee and cakes are provided, but please bring your own packed lunch.

BOOKING: To book a place or to be added to our mailing list email Kirsteen or Mark at: mkraku@yahoo.com

Abstract Expressionism Day at Westbury Arts Centre

Posted: 17 Jun 2013 09:47 AM PDT

Abstract Expressionism Day

Tutor – Kate Davies

29 June 2013 // 10am–4pm // £45.00

Westbury Arts Centre, Foxcovert Rd, Shenley Wood, Milton Keynes, MK5 6AA

A messy and fun experimental art day. Suitable for all the family.

Find out about what made the Abstract Expressionists tick. Who they were, how they created their highly collectable and prized paintings and images. Then we shall get down to creating our own ‘Jackson Pollock’ style paintings where we can throw, squirt, splash, drag and drip paint onto a huge piece of paper. Do your own studies and experiments on smaller sheets of paper. It’s a sense of artistic freedom seldom people would allow themselves! If you have any pots of water based household paint with bits left in, bring them along – the more colourful the better.

Kate regularly teaches art and photography at Northampton College and University, and has a wealth of experience in all creative fields. Kate is CRB checked at Northampton College
