Summer’s here – and with it a brace of new productions from Talking Birds. Posted: 21 Jun 2013 03:50 AM PDT For months now, Talking Birds has been working on a top secret project for the National Trust. The OakMobile will launch to the world (well, Birmingham anyway) on Saturday June 22nd in Victoria Square from 11am. We'd love you to come along and see it… Trade in Lunacy is a piece of chamber theatre about the private asylums of the 18th century, being made in collaboration with the Centre for the History of Medicine, University of Warwick (with whom Talking Birds previously collaborated on 3 Doctors). It contains fascinating testimony from the time by people involved in the treatment of mental health conditions. Troy Story at Birmingham Town Hall on 9th July is the prequel to the company's hugely successful intergalactic opera Space Odyssey, in co-production with Orchestra of the Swan and in collaboration with both Special Educational Needs and mainstream schools. Featuring live orchestra, hundreds of singers, several monsters and a lot more jokes than Homer, it is suitable for all ages, and tickets are a Royal Opera House-busting £7 / £3.50 conc from http://www.thsh.co.uk/event/troy-story-an-intergalactic-opera/ twitter: @birdmail
Posted: 21 Jun 2013 03:49 AM PDT Invitation to Open Space Matt Burman, Louisa Davies, Steve Johnston, Frances Land, Roxana Silbert and James Yarker invite you to an Open Space Event to address the question: "HOW DO WE WORK TOGETHER TO PUSH THEATRE FORWARD IN THE WEST MIDLANDS?" We all share a passion for Theatre and for its growth in the region. Individually we are all committed and working to this cause but experience tells us that our greatest strength comes when we work together. It has been two years since the theatre tribes of the West Midlands have come together in Open Space to chart paths and forge alliances. This time has come again. Our gathering on 17th will allow everyone with an interest in the future of theatre in the West Midlands the opportunity to address the issues that most concern them. No one will leave without having had their chance to have their say. This is a rare chance for us all to meet and re-empower each other. Similar conferences in November 2009 and June 2011 proved an invaluable forum for plotting action that led to tangible, sustained change in the local theatre scene. Please come and help shape our shared future in theatre. Open Space is called on 17th July, 2013 @ A E Harris: 110 Northwood Street, Birmingham, B3 1SZ and will run 10:00 – 18:00 RSVP: Donations will be requested on the day to help cover costs (£3 or more would be good). A vegetarian buffet will available for £5 to give you an option that isn't just bringing sandwiches, crisps and chocolate. Again it would be useful to get an indication of what the scale of demand may be.

Midsummer Pop Up Shop at the Shop Front Theatre Posted: 21 Jun 2013 03:34 AM PDT Midsummer Merchants at the Shop Front Theatre When: Saturday 22nd June 10am – 4pm Who: Theatre Absolute, and independent crafters and home producers What: Midsummer Merchants – a one day pop up shop in the Shop Front Theatre Where: Theatre Absolute's Shop Front Theatre, 38 City Arcade, CV1 3HW COST: Free event Theatre Absolute and the Shop Front Theatre in City Arcade is proud to be hosting the Midsummer Merchants pop-up shop. The one-day event will be on Saturday June 22nd from 10 – 4pm. There will be a mix of affordable handmade crafts and homemade goodies for sale from local talented makers. It's a perfect opportunity to purchase bespoke birthday presents, locally grown garden plants, or even a very early stocking filler! Theatre Absolute's producer Julia Negus said "We have had a busy first half of the year at the Shop Front Theatre and what a great way to start the Summer with a free pop-up event that celebrates and supports the diverse and creative talent in Coventry." Artisan cake-maker Ellie McCann says: "This event is a unique opportunity for small, local artisans to showcase their skills and sell their goods to the Coventry people. Many of the stall holders will be very small or start up businesses who as of yet do not have the capacity to rent permanent premises, the pop up provides a real opportunity to expand the customer base." Crafter Charlotte Reed says "Midsummer Merchants pop-up is a great way for us to meet like minded makers and create a community. When our high streets are struggling this sort if event is a great way to shop local!" So remember to pop down to the Pop-up Midsummer Merchants this Saturday For further information contact: Julia Negus, 07799 292957 julia@theatreabsolute.co.uk Theatre Absolute, Shop Front Theatre, 38 City Arcade, Coventry CV1 3HW.
EARLY DAY MOTION AND DEBATE IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS Posted: 20 Jun 2013 09:55 AM PDT At the beginning of June, a new Early Day Motion on the importance of the arts and creative industries was launched by Dame Joan Ruddock. The motion already has 58 signatories, but the more it gets, the higher the profile of these issues with our legislators. Many WN? colleagues are using this EDM as a way to get their MPs talking about cultural issues and are asking them to sign it. The details (and the list of current signatories) can be found here. This seems the kind of opportunity we discussed at the What next? conference to contact local MPs and also volunteer to brief them if they would like to know more about the impact of arts and creative industries on their constituency. It would be great if we all did this and encouraged others to contact their MPs as well. There is also a labour led debate on arts and culture in the house of Commons on Wednesday 19 June, which MPs could be encouraged to participate in, detailshere. If your MP has already signed up perhaps let them know how pleased you are that they have done so, and again ask if they would like a briefing and if they are planning on attending the debate on Wednesday?

£120k Choreographic Research Fund Open To All Artforms Posted: 20 Jun 2013 09:43 AM PDT £120,000 research fund open to artists and creatives across all artforms A National Dance Network initiative, supported by the Jerwood Charitable Foundation and delivered by DanceXchange.
The Jerwood Choreographic Research Project (JCRP) is an innovative new investment model for open-ended research in choreographic practice open to artists and creatives across all art forms.
Bringing together a range of investors from across the cultural sector along with funding from The Jerwood Charitable Foundation to create an investment pot of over £120,000, the project is now seeking research proposals from artists and creatives from any artform who consider their work to be choreographic.
We anticipate that the average amount given to a successful pitch will be £10k and that approximately 12 projects will be supported from a shortlist of no more than 30. In exceptional circumstances, however, DanceXchange reserves the right to support a smaller number of projects or for all of the funds to be allocated to one project. - A short written application. Deadline Monday 29 July 2013, 6pm - A pitch by shortlisted artists on Wednesday 25 September 2013 - Successful artists will deliver their research project by the end of December 2014.
