We also feature a chat I had with Avalon Video at the Wolverhampton Steam and Vintage show about Len and Jane Crane and the second DVD that is being compiled around the Crane's work in the world of Steam and beyond and I had to catch up with Len and Jane too next to the mechanical wonders they preserve.

Open Space Invite 17 July 13

Posted: 10 Jun 2013 06:45 AM PDT

Invitation to Open Space

Matt Burman, Louisa Davies, Steve Johnston, Frances Land, Roxana Silbert and James Yarker invite you to an
Open Space Event
to address the question:
"HOW DO WE WORK TOGETHER TO PUSH THEATRE FORWARD IN THE WEST MIDLANDS?"

We all share a passion for Theatre and for its growth in the region. Individually we are all committed and working to this cause but experience tells us that our greatest strength comes when we work together. It has been two years since the theatre tribes of the West Midlands have come together in Open Space to chart paths and forge alliances. This time has come again.
Our gathering on 17th will allow everyone with an interest in the future of theatre in the West Midlands the opportunity to address the issues that most concern them. No one will leave without having had their chance to have their say. This is a rare chance for us all to meet and re-empower each other.
Similar conferences in November 2009 and June 2011 proved an invaluable forum for plotting action that led to tangible, sustained change in the local theatre scene. Please come and help shape our shared future in theatre.
Open Space is called on 17th July, 2013
@ A E Harris: 110 Northwood Street, Birmingham, B3 1SZ
and will run 10:00 – 18:00

RSVP:
It will help us run the event if we have a sense of how many people are coming, so please register your intention to attend. Here:

Donations will be requested on the day to help cover costs (£3 or more would be good).

A vegetarian buffet will available for £5 to give you an option that isn't just bringing sandwiches, crisps and chocolate. Again it would be useful to get an indication of what the scale of demand may be.

Is Culture Valuable?

Posted: 10 Jun 2013 06:40 AM PDT

Warwick Creative Exchange invites you to a seminar, 'Is Culture Valuable?', to be held on Thursday 27th June, 6-8pm, in the Studio Theatre, Warwick Arts Centre. Contributors are: playwright and cultural commentator, David Edgar; Dr Eleonora Belfiore, the #culturalvalue Initiative, Centre for Cultural Policy Studies University of Warwick; Chris Cooper, Artistic Director of Big Brum Theatre in Education; Dr Will Davies, Centre for Interdisciplinary Methodologies University of Warwick; and Deirdre Figueiredo, Director of Craftspace.

Articulating cultural value is a key and ongoing issue for cultural organisations as well as for academics working across a wide range of disciplines. At this moment in particular, there is pressure and temptation to frame the value of arts and culture in ways that draw heavily from economics and to justify public spending in this field primarily in terms of jobs, economic development, and tourism. This seminar aims to tackle these issues from a wider set of concerns and approaches, in order to contribute to the growing debate on why and how the arts and culture are valued by both the people who create it and those who participate in it.

Warwick Creative Exchange is a network of West Midlands cultural organisations and University of Warwick academics, established to develop research collaborations and dialogue on common themes of interest. This is the first in a planned series of seminars over the next two years.

We look forward to seeing you at the seminar. If you wish to attend, please RSVP to Laura Edwards:Laura.Edwards@wbs.ac.uk by 20th June.

Old Joint Stock Theatre announce their Edinburgh Fringe festival debut!

Katharine Hepburn Returns To Edinburgh in Old Joint Stock Theatre Company's Tea At Five

It started with her triumphant British theatrical debut at the Edinburgh International Festival in 1952, and she would later call it the biggest disappointment of her career.

At the 1952 Oscars, Katharine Hepburn receives her fifth Oscar nomination for The African Queen and is on the cover of TIME magazine. At the height of her fame she walks away from movies for three years, that summer coming to Edinburgh to make her British stage debut performing Bernard Shaw's The Millionairess, which then transfers to the West End. The Millionairess was acutely personal to Hepburn – her parents read Shaw to her when she was a child, and she was overjoyed when it transferred to Broadway that winter.

Yet lukewarm reviews from Broadway damaged then play's prospects. Hepburn struggled for years to get it adapted into a film: she employed Preston Sturges to write the screenplay, offered to work for free and to pay the director herself, but no studio picked up the project. In a rollercoaster career of highs and lows, Hepburn called this the biggest disappointment of her career.

Now Birmingham's Old Joint Stock Theatre Company are bringing Katharine Hepburn back to Edinburgh in an acclaimed revival of Tea At Five, Matthew Lombardo's one-woman play recounting the life and final days of Katharine Hepburn which debuted in 2002 with Kate Mulgrew (Captain Janeway, Star Trek: Voyager) in the lead role.

Old Joint Stock revived the piece in 2012 with Meg Lloyd in the lead role and the production swept the Stratford-Upon-Avon Fringe last summer, winning Best Solo Performance and Lloyd taking home the Best Actress award. Now the company are bringing Katharine back to Edinburgh for performances at Surgeon's Hall throughout August 2013.

This is the Old Joint Stock's Edinburgh debut. Such is the success of the fledgling Birmingham pub theatre production house, owners Fuller's Brewery are planning to follow it up with a new London pub theatre in Croydon in 2014.

"Captivating, flawless…Tea at Five is one of those pieces of performing art where I would like to grab people from the street, sit them down and show them just what great entertainment they are missing." 4 STARS Behind The Arras, 2012
