China Plate Shows, news and Recommendations Posted: 21 Jun 2013 04:13 AM PDT Here is our latest China Plate news plus our pick of shows, events and opportunities. China Plate news… We've just returned from a fantastic 10 days at Pulse Fringe Festival in Ipswich, which was both exhausting and brilliant! This year's festival saw 47 fantastic companies presenting a hugely exciting range of work, as well as a brand new competition – the Suitcase Prize, which gave a £1000 to the best piece of work that could travel on public transport. The prize was an experimental new way of inspiring theatre-makers to create environmentally and economically sustainable work. All of the work was of an incredibly high standard, and we were thrilled to announce the inaugural winners as Two Destination Language, who presented an excerpt from their brilliant new show, Near Gone. There were numerous other highlights, including a day of scratch performances from some of the most exciting up and coming theatre-makers in the UK; bespoke work made with members of the New Wolsey audience, and the New Wolsey Young Company respectively; and a stonking line up of other shows. This spring we joined forces with Pulse, Sprint, MayFest and Sampled to create a brand new making opportunity, The Spring Festivals Commission. Over the course of the spring Made In China have been working on a new show, Gym Party which each festival showed as a work in progress showing. They're in the process of finishing it off at the moment and it will be opening in its finished form at The Almeida Summer Festival on the 12th and 13th of July: http://www.almeida.co.uk/event/gymparty After a hugely successful Spring Tour (with the show playing to sold-out audiences at Battersea Arts Centre), we're extremely proud to announce that Caroline Horton's Messhas been nominated for an Off-West End award for Best New Play! The awards will be announced next Spring. Mess also won an Argus Angel Award for Best New Play (Brighton Fringe). The show is now gearing up for a 10- week Autumn tour around the UK – dates will be announced soon. You can keep up to date with all Caroline's news via her website here. Inspector Sands' first show for children, Rock Pool, has finished its initial preview tour, and the company will be reworking and touring the show in 2014. Responses from audiences and venues alike were excellent, with many commenting that the show had equal appeal to both children and adults. Prawn and Crab are looking forward to more adventures next year, so watch this space for touring dates in 2014! Paul is currently in rehearsal at the New Vic Theatre, Newcastle-under-Lyme for Stones in His Pockets, which will be playing from 5th-27th July. This is the second show Paul has directed at the New Vic so do go along and see it if you're nearby! You can book your tickets here. We're really excited to be co-producing Action Hero's show, Hokes Bluff, in Edinburgh this year. The show has been chosen as part of the British Council Showcase, and will be part of Forest Fringe's 2013 programme. Hoke's Bluff uses high school storylines, inspiring locker room speeches and sentimentality to tell an underdog story that's been told a million times before, shifting and re-arranging the trite conventions and narratives of American teen movies to talk about what it means to be a winner on the inside. It'll be previewing at Warwick Arts Centre on Wednesday 24th July. Tickets will be available on the Warwick Arts Centre website shortly. Finally, we're extremely sad to announce that Rosie is leaving us..she's off to Australia where her soon to be husband has just become Production Manager at Sydney Opera House. We are of course sad to see her go… but wonder if this might be the start of China Plate Australia… Below is some more information on our projects, plus recommendations of some fantastic opportunities and events. Right Up Your Street – an Improvised Soap Opera Posted: 21 Jun 2013 04:11 AM PDT Foghorn's massively successful improvised soap opera is back… And this time there's singing! What does it take to create a successful soap? Dozens of writers? Months of planning? Millions of pounds? Not if you're Foghorn Improv! In this show we will create a gripping improvised soap opera from start to finish, using nothing but audience suggestions and our own imaginations. No scripts, no rehearsals, but plenty of laughs, tears, and leaps into the unknown. Right Up Your Street – an Improvised Soap Opera |
