Posted: 10 Apr 2013 06:22 AM PDT

Forget Brighton or Camden, one of the biggest and most popular Handmade & Vintage events in the country is on our doorstep. This huge event has free entry and takes place every 3 months.  Over the last 2 years it's become established as one of the highlights of the MK calendar.

The weekend of 1-2 JUNE sees the return of the MK Handmade & Vintage Weekend Extravaganza, which, for two days, transforms Middleton Hall in front of John Lewis in thecentre:mk into a huge treasure trove of 120 large indoor market stalls, crammed with thousands of authentic handmade and vintage items you won't find in the shops - and of course it's FREE ENTRY as always!

The ethos of the event is to provide an affordable platform for the cream of local designer-makers and vintage/retro sellers - carefully selected because of their outstanding originality, flair, quality and affordability.   Visitors know they are guaranteed a different mixture of great local exhibitors every time.  Bought in goods are never allowed.

You'll find everything from fashions to furniture, homewares to home baking, unusual interior design pieces to collectables and the cool and quirky.  Some of the expert makers will be offering unique gifts for Fathers' Day, and don't forget they will happily discuss commissions should you like a bespoke piece of work to your own specifications.

It's quite a spectacle, very purse-friendly and great fun. If you love a unique style and the thrill of the bargain hunt, it is THE place to shop in the region. Allow yourself a few hours to explore it all though.

The event is there all weekend of 1-2 June and stays open for late night shopping on Saturday (until 7pm).

The Best of The One World Club - 3rd of June

Posted: 16 Apr 2013 02:33 AM PDT

Monday 3rd June sees The Best Of One World Club; a party to celebrate racial, ethnic and cultural harmony in Milton Keynes. Not just a show, but a party, because the acts booked will make you feel like you're at a party! Party hats are welcome, as are silly clothes. It's the week of Stony Live, and we are proud to be part of such an esteemed festival!

Where? The Cock Hotel's plush function hall: The Marquee Suite on Stony Stratford's High Street.

Time: doors open 6.30 for a 7.30 show.

It's free for the first 130 people. Arrivals after that don't pay anything either, they just don't get in; that's the number after which we have to close the doors for health and safety reasons.

Who's on?

George Anthony and Ayo. If you've seen them before you'll understand why they are the headline act. When they're singing you know you're at a party! You just can't sit still in your seat! Don't believe me? See for yourself at

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TR1C6ilKnj0&list=UUPVipqweki6xGiE8PSFCVHQ&index=2&feature=plcp

Pearls of Persia. This atmospheric international dance act inspired the audience at our last show with their electric atmosphere, so we snapped them up straight away for this one.

Outfield

Superstar singer Debbie Murray fronts this 110% high energy dance band. When they're playing you know you're at a party! A sense of déjà-vu here. Even the language of this newsletter is multi cultural! They were so exciting at our last show that we snapped them up straight away for this one. Here we go again with this déjà-vu lark!

Sabina Adatia has to be one of Milton Keynes' greatest gifts to the celebration of multi-culture! A Bollywood dancer of style agility and grace, you'll be knocked out by her, so don't sit too close!

Nicky Prince: largely acknowledged as one of the finest singers you're likely to see anywhere, you'll feel like you're in a stadium watching a world-famous superstar! Take a look!

Caribbean Culture People

They are the real thing! A treat from Jamaica. We are so lucky to have such diverse talent in our city, and even luckier to have them with us for this party!

B-Boy JMC

There are no words to describe this act! If his street dancing doesn't send your head spinning you must be looking the wrong way!

I've got nothing more to tell you; the acts speak for themselves. The Best of One World Club is one party to not miss!

Poet's Corner in Stony Live

Posted: 09 May 2013 03:42 AM PDT

The Bard of Stony Stratford and The Friends of Stony Stratford Library present Poet’s Corner - an evening of poetry, tea and biscuits. As part of Stony Live, the town’s annual festival of music and the arts, Stony Stratford Library is hosting an informal get together for people who love reading, writing or listening to poetry, whilst having a cup of tea and maybe eating a biscuit or two.

Come along and share your favourite poetry. All are welcome to read, recite or just sit back and listen, in a relaxed, informal setting. Original material is welcome, as is the work of your favourite writers.

This is also an opportunity for everyone to contribute to the Bardic Book. Since the inauguration of the first Bard of Stony Stratford in 2011, the Bardic Book has become a written record of the poems, performances and activities of the Bards of Stony. This book is on public display in the library. For this event, everyone is invited to submit a poem to be included in the Bardic Book. Just bring your poetry, hand-written or typed, on a sheet of paper for your chance to write a new chapter in the poetry tradition of Stony Live

Free entry. Tea and biscuits will be provided. A voluntary donation will be taken. All proceeds will go to Stony Live and the Friends of Stony Stratford Library.

  • Bletchley Community Centre, George St, MK2 2 NR

We’ve lined up eggs-traordinary song and dance, eggs-travagant sets and costumes – with eggs-cruciating jokes by the dozen! And now we’re looking for talented and enthusiastic performers who’ve got the “eggs”-factor to come and join us.

Mother Goose thinks she’s hit the jackpot when her feathered friend Priscilla starts laying golden eggs. But will her new-found fortune bring happiness? Can the search for eternal beauty ever have a happy ending? Mother Goose will be waddling into Stantonbury Campus Theatre, Milton Keynes this Christmas, from 21st December 2013 to 4th January 2014.

    Come to our Introductory Meeting where you'll hear more about;

    • Our special retelling of the show: how we’ll be turning Mother Goose into a panto eggs-travagansa; the Dreams ‘n’ Wishes way!
    • Character details: Who does what and when; and see what you want to audition for.
    • Auditions: When they will be held and what you can expect in words, song and dance!

All this - and more - will be revealed on the night. So make a note in your diary right now and come take a gander at the amdram event of the year. You’d be quackers to miss it!

Opera North: The Girl I Left Behind MeFeaturing Jessica Walker (mezzo)and James Holmes (piano)

supremely well-sung and coolly contemporary look at one of the most intriguing questions of musical theatre – just what is it that makes a woman in trousers so appealing?

With just a piano, a microphone and a few well-chosen items of male attire, mezzo-soprano Jessica Walker and theatre director Neil Bartlett conjure up an entire world, from the swaggering cross-dressers of the Victorian Music Hall, to the ambiguous boy-heroes of Mozart and Strauss.

A provocative, flirtatious and deliciously personal one-woman guide to a whole forgotten chapter of female performance.
