LIVE SESSIONS

A monthly intimate live session bringing you nothing but music - stripped down & up close.

This months Live Sessions is bringing you GIRLS that ROCK! The best in local female fronted bands/solo artists.

Presenting:

The Individuals

Indie/ Punk from Milton Keynes, lots of our own songs & occasional cover.

"The Individuals are very exciting – a singer with an impressively full voice, solid support from the instrumentalists, and a livewire drummer" - The Dudebox

We are a Milton Keynes based band, Started in 2011, that so far, have always been crowd-pleasing, never leaving a venue without playing an encore. While we are not metal, we are heavily influenced by it.

Our songs are a mixture of happy, angry, melancholy and bitchy, utilising the experience (some with little, some with lots) of member of the band.

Roses & Pirates

An exciting four piece Girl band from Bucks.

Unique, dynamic sound, with each member being individually versatile with a wide range of instruments, their sound ranges from chill out acoustic to rock and folk - simple placid to feisty and a bit in between.

There is no specific genre these girls can be defined to, each from different backgrounds combining a mix of influences to produce an eclectic performance of sound.

The Girls are currently recording their debut album, you can expect the exciting arrival later this year.

Brian Culbertson at The Stables

Posted: 03 Feb 2012 03:28 AM PST

Friday 4 May, 8pm

Tickets £21.50

By the time Brian Culbertson comes to The Stables, his 13th album should be released. His high energy show caused quite a stir in 2011 and his 2012 visit should be equally stunning. Recent collaborations with Maurice White and Larry Dunn of Earth, Wind & Fire amongst others, have influenced his style to such a degree that his live performances definitely show the funkier side of the smooth jazz genre. His line up for the show will be top UK producer Andy Whitmore (also on keyboards) Otto Williams (bass), Derek Nash (sax) and Marc Parnell (drums).

The Portraits at The Stables

Posted: 03 Feb 2012 06:54 AM PST

Saturday 5 May, 8.45pm Stage 2

Tickets £10 in advance, £12 on the door

The Portraits are Lorraine (vocals, rhythm guitar) and Jeremy (piano, vocals) Millington and their fabulous band. Their simple observations of life from the perspective of those that have loved, lost, travelled, had children and laughed about it all, make for a cosy brand of acoustic pop with beautiful harmonies and folk and world music tinges. The duo's last CD, The Blushing Of A World In White, was released to rave reviews, and The Portraits are using the album to promote awareness of the situation in Burma, raising funds through CD sales for an amazing school there.

The Christians are an outstanding soul-influenced group who had hits in the 80s and 90s from their million selling album of the same name, including Forgotten Town, Born Again, Ideal World and Hooverville.  The Daily Mirror described Garry Christian as having one of the best voices of the century. Fast forward 25 years and the group are still lead by the smooth-toned Mr Christian, who sounds as good as ever!  With a brand new album launched in May 2012 and the rerelease of anniversary albums earlier in the spring, 2012 looks to be a great year for The Christians.

Busnoys at The Stables

Posted: 03 Feb 2012 06:55 AM PST

Tuesday 8 May, 8.45pm Stage 2

Tickets £10 in advance, £12 on the door

Named after a 15th century composer, Busnoys is very much a 21st century band. Fronted by vibraphonist Martin Pyne, the trio create a rich, evocative soundworld, full of freewheeling melodic interplay and evocative atmospheres, one moment groovy and swinging, another atmospheric and tender. Virtuosic bassist Jeff Spencer is the driving force behind the exciting Resonation Big Band while drummer Trevor Davies has long been very much in demand for his subtle touch and sensitivity.

"Busnoys offer an intelligent, imaginative combination of vibes, bass guitar and drums... This is a genuinely contemporary record that should appeal to new as well as established jazz fans." Jazz UK.

Boo Hewerdine & Brooks Williams at The Stables

Posted: 03 Feb 2012 03:35 AM PST

Tuesday 8 May, 8pm

Tickets £12.50

Hewerdine is an English songwriter and lead singer of indie legends The Bible. Williams is a slide guitar wizard from Georgia, USA. Their plan was to record an album using vintage mics and equipment live in just 5 days. The aim was to capture the sound of two guitarists and singers from completely different backgrounds working together in harmony and after a day and a half they realised it was finished and that the result was even better than they'd hoped for. The album is being released in April 2012 and Boo and Brooks will be touring it here.

Posted: 03 Feb 2012 06:57 AM PST

Supported by Kola

Wednesday 9 May, 8.45pm Stage 2

Tickets £10 in advance, £12 on the door

With balalaika, electric lap steel guitar, double bass and three part harmonies this multi-instrumental band set themselves apart from the norm. Their British Americana sound, influenced by delta blues and gypsy swing, has produced a style of songwriting that feels as comfortable as an old pair of shoes you just can't throw away. Performances at Glastonbury's Acoustic and Avalon stages cemented their popularity on the acoustic scene and built them a strong fan base. Drumrolls For Somersaults, the band's third album, reached number one in the Itunes UK blues chart last year.

David Scheel at The Stables

Posted: 03 Feb 2012 03:37 AM PST

Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only the Piano Player

Wednesday 9 May, 8pm

Tickets £14

A runaway success in the West End and at successive Edinburgh Festivals, this hilarious send-up of classical music has established pianist David Scheel as the successor to the legendary Victor Borge. Beautiful music coupled with musical fun, performed in so many voices that David has been compared to Robin Williams and Peter Ustinov. Hear a familiar tune played in the styles of the old masters and an i-Pod, two famous pieces played simultaneously (one with the right hand, one with the left), plus his "translation" of the lyrics of Waltzing Matilda, already a comedy classic.
