Photographic Residency Project with Inter-Action MK Posted: 30 May 2012 02:23 AM PDT Photographic Residency Project with Inter-Action MKThis project, comprised of a total of 19 framed images and text, of which we have a selection here, was produced by a group of disabled people through workshops with artist/photographer Ross Boyd. The project took place between 1996 and 1998, however the images and issues raised by them are as poignant, powerful and relevant today as they were then; a strong testament to both the power of the images and the continuing need to revisit the issues they raise. Launched at the MK Disability Festival in 1996, the exhibition aimed to raise awareness in the wider public of disability issues and to increase the level of confidence in photographic, artisitic and group leadership skills of the participants. It was also exhibited in a variety of of venues including Milton Keynes Civic offices, the Community Trust, Stantonbury Theatre and Acorn House where it returns here for a deserved second airing. This was also followed by a national tour and a series of awareness rasing events in schools. Ross Boyd is a well known Milton Keynes based artist working with variety of media including photography. His work has been extensive including mainstream teaching at a variety of levels and ages through to numerous major residencies including "Looking back, looking forward", an East Midlands Shape residency in Pastures Psychiatric Hospital, Derby, which resulted in two books and a touring exhibition. Ross' personal experience of disability informs and validates his work with others in this area. His personal art work is represented in public and private collections in the UK and abroad. Community arts charity Inter-Action MK has been bringing arts to life in Milton Keynes for over 35 years. We use the arts to improve the life chances of disabled people and people in challenging circumstances. Our innovative programme of inclusive arts successfully brings people of all backgrounds together in shared creativity. Our programme helps participants to develop creative, personal and social skills. Inter-Action MK creates high quality and innovative opportunities for all the communities of Milton Keynes to participate in the arts.

Charity Photo-Exhibition: Through My Eyes Posted: 29 May 2012 09:14 AM PDT The Photographic Angle presents an exhibition in Milton Keynes called: Through My Eyes a photo-project created by the South African NGO, Ikmava Youth and exhibited by the UK charity The photographic Angle. 9 Jun-13 Jun: Milton Keynes, Redwing House & Kestrel House, Kents Hill Park, Timbold Drive FREE ENTRY All exhibitions are open between 10am - 3pm The future is shining like a piece of diamond lying down in the ground and ready for someone to grab it. Slindile Cele, Grade 11 Ikamva Youth is a township-based non-profit organisation, established in 2003 with branches in three South Africa provinces, currently operating from Khayelitsha, Nyanga and Masiphumelele in the Western Cape, Ivory Park in Gauteng, and Cato Crest in KwaZulu-Natal. South African youth face many obstacles that perpetuate disadvantage. Most township schools produce learners whose academic performance is below grade level. Poor matric results and low awareness of post-school opportunities lead to high numbers of unemployed youth (estimated at over 60% in Khayelitsha). Most learners in township schools do not receive the skills development opportunities afforded their more privileged counterparts in the suburbs, including computer literacy and extra-mural activities. In addition to the difficulties that living in poverty and receiving a sub-standard education brings, many township youth are infected and/or affected by HIV/AIDS. Ikamva Youth encourages self-expression, builds confidence and provides a safe space in which learners can communicate their personal views and experiences. This collection of photographic works came out of a series of photography workshops Ikamva Youth offered its learners. The participants had several days of technical training, and time with the cameras as a means of voicing their ideas, discussing societal issues ad documenting the local issues, lifestyles and history of the places they live in.
