Film Screening and Talk

Thursday 24 May / 6.30pm / Free

Film Screening: ‘Stendhal Syndrome’ by Alistair Gentry
Is traditional art doing something to our minds that contemporary art can't do?Stendhal Syndrome is a recorded performance lecture about the psychiatric/psychosomatic condition in which people are mentally and physically overwhelmed by looking at too much art. Only representational art causes Stendhal Syndrome: abstract, conceptual, installation and other forms of contemporary art have never been known to do so. The Uffizi in Florence, the Louvre in Paris and the Vatican are all prime sites for Stendhal Syndrome.

Writer and artist Alistair Gentry’s diverse work has been seen and heard in digital media, on radio, television and the stage, in art galleries, at film festivals, in print and online. He has been included in group exhibitions worldwide, and he is a member of the East Anglian artists' research group Market Project. He researches extensively for his performance works and employs scientific or academic forms and methods

Talk: Evolution of the paranormal
'Why we may have extraordinary abilities' by Dr. Richard Broughton.

Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Northampton and President of the Society for Psychical Research, Dr Broughton is the author of numerous scientific papers and a critically acclaimed popular book on parapsychology. He frequently serves as a commentator in television programs on parapsychology and intuition issues, most recently appearing with Tony Robinson in a Channel 4 documentary. His principal research areas are anomalous intuition and the emotional underpinnings of extrasensory phenomena.

Disability Arts Online are seeking digital artists

Posted: 22 May 2012 04:52 AM PDT

Disability Arts Online are seeking digital artists and people wanting to have their work digitised

Deadline fast approaching, please read on...

Disability Arts Online are looking for a digital artist to make work in response to Outside In artists.

As part of our Diverse Perspectives programme we are looking to commission a South East-based digital artist to collaborate with one or two Outside In artists to make a series of short, moving image, digital works to be showcased on Outside In and Disability Arts Online websites.

Deadline for producing the digital work would be 1st October 2012 and the fee will be: £1500

We are looking for an artistic response to the work of one or two artists who have submitted galleries to the Outside In website. The work produced could be film, animation, audio or a combination of moving image work, that is aesthetically exciting.

Our aim is that the resulting piece(s) will encourage people to make art, by providing an exciting digital response to the Outside In artists technique or creative process.

These works will be shared on both DAO and the Outside In websites in order to give a deeper insight into the artists' working practices.

The deadline for producing the work would be 1 October 2012, in preparation for showcasing as part of the launch of Outside In at Pallant House Gallery on 27 October 2012. We are also in negotiation to fund the costs of the touring of the digital artworks as part of the 2013 Outside In exhibitions starting in March 2013 and completing in April 2014.

We are looking for proposals from artists who identify with having an impairment or who consider themselves disabled, who would be keen to liaise with Outside In artists who are interested in having a unique aspect of their artistic process captured for posterity.

DAO will support the digital artist awarded this commission to make contact with the Outside In artist(s) to support the collaboration.

Proposals must include details of:

  • The style of presentation of the work (eg how it will display)

  • Accessibility (all video must be subtitled)

  • Details of previous work

  • A rough breakdown of costs involved in making the work, including artists

In addition to the fee of £1500 there is a limited amount of additional funds available for access and travel to be negotiated during the commissioning process.

Please send your proposals to trish@disabilityartsonline.org.uk by 1 June 2012

ALSO

Disability Arts Online (DAO) is looking to find Outside In artist(s) who would be interested in having a digital artist come and make an artistic response to their work.

DAO is a unique journal for discussion of arts and culture from a disability perspective. We have recently received an Arts Council Award for our Diverse Perspectives programme, celebrating aspects of the Cultural Olympiad. As part of this work we are currently in the process of commissioning a digital artist to work in partnership with Outside In artist(s), to create an artistic response to your creative process.

If you have a gallery on the Outside In website and would like a digital artist using film, animation, audio or a combination that is aesthetically exciting, then please let us know. Our aim is that the resulting work will encourage people to make art, by providing an exciting digital response to your technique or artistic process.

We envision the end piece of work would be one or two moving image pieces that would be showcased on the DAO and Outside In websites as part of the Outside In launch in October 2012. The digital showcase will hopefully be shown as part of the Outside In touring exhibition between 2013-2014.

You would need to be prepared to allow a digital artist to record you in the act of making work, using moving image, photographic, audio, or a combination of these digital processes! However you would not necessarily need to appear in person in the digital piece created. This is an exciting opportunity to have your creative process recorded to give an intimate record of art in the making!

Please send a short statement about you and your work, letting us know your reasons for wanting to be part of this project.

Please supply a link to your online gallery.

Please let us know of any access issues you may have.

Please send your expression of interest to Colin Hambrook Editor: editor@disabilityartsonline.org.uk

Summer Daydreams

Carole Matthews

Published by Sphere on 24th May 2012, £6.99 paperback original

What if you had always dreamed of something more . . . ?

Nell McNamara has a happy life: her boyfriend Olly adores her, their four-year-old daughter Petal is the centre of their world and Nell has a steady job in the local chip shop. When the chippy needs a makeover, Nell jumps at the chance to unleash the creativity fizzing inside her.
Inspired by what she can achieve - and encouraged by the best friends a girl can have - Nell is determined to try something new. Waving goodbye to the chip shop, she starts up a new business making her own line of must-have handbags, which are soon flying off the shelves!

It seems Nell's dreams are finally coming true, but her success doesn't come without a price. Before too long, Nell has to ask herself if it's really possible to have it all . . .

Full of fun, love and laughter, soak up the sunshine with Summer Daydreams.

'There's something about a Carole Matthews' book that makes us feel warm and fuzzy inside'

'Will have you giggling from the start . . . Hilarious'

OK!

Summer Daydreams is Carole Matthew's 20th novel. Her books have been translated into twenty languages and sold to Hollywood.

Born in St Helens, Merseyside, Carole began writing after she entered a short story competition in Writing Magazine and won a thousand pounds.  Then - to her and everyone else's amazement - she spent the money, not on shoes and handbags, but on a writing course.  The tutor on the course liked what she was writing and recommended an agent who took her on straight away.  She got her first book deal, for Let's Meet on Platform 8, a week later.

Carole lives with her partner, Kevin, near Milton Keynes.

Summer Daydreams

Carole Matthews

Published by Sphere on 24th May 2012, £6.99 paperback original

Summer Daydreams is based on the story of Helen Rochfort, her family and her designer handbags. Carole and Helen met on facebook through a shared love of handbags, and after Carole asked Helen to create a limited edition handbag for the launch of her novel The Chocolate Lovers Club, they became firm friends.

Carole Matthews and Helen Rochfort are available for interviews and for features on their unique friendship, and how to follow your own career daydreams (whether it be designing handbags or writing novels), in spite of all the current economic reasons not to do so.

Established in September 2007, Helen Rochfort creates curious and decadent frame box clasped handbags and accessories. In November 2011 the Helen Rochfort range of Handbags appeared on ITV This Morning, heralded as a future collectable. Helen Rochfort handbags and accessories have taken the worldwide market by storm, and have been stocked in Harrods, Fenwicks and Bentalls with now over 110 stockists.

Stars that own Helen Rochfort designs include Holly Willoughby, Sienna Miller, Lauren Laverne, Denise Van Outen, Alesha Dixon, Anastasia, Michelle Keegan, Alexandra Burke, US Fashion Designer (and daughter of Jack Nicholson!) Jennifer Nicholson, Designer Alice Temperley, The Duke Spirit's Liela Moss, and Victoria's Secret Model Libby Hobday.

Helen, like Nell in Summer Daydreams, is based in Hitchin, worked in a chip shop while at University, and later left a job in a design store to start her handbag business, despite having a young daughter at home. Helen now has two daughters, Poppy (7) and Alice (1). While studying for a degree course in Fashion and Textile design, a lecturer told her that she wouldn't make it in the industry. Helen met Prince Charles at a Princes Trust event like Nell, and was also conned out of a large sum of money by a fake US Shopping Channel. While her husband wasn't shot at(!) when he travelled to the US to confront the fraudulent company, Helen unfortunately didn't recover her money like Nell.

Stantonbury Campus Theatre Online Survey for future development

Posted: 22 May 2012 03:45 AM PDT

You may or may not be aware that Stantonbury Campus Theatre is currently owned, operated and managed by the school. However, the Stantonbury Campus Board of Governors would like to consider all the options for the future management and development of the Theatre (and the Leisure Centre) and have appointed Consultants to conduct this process and make recommendations to the Board at the beginning of July.

There is now a process of consultation and it is vital that we get as many responses as possible to this to ensure that our stakeholders and people who represent the cultural sector have an input into that consultation.

There is an individual online survey and we need to ensure that as many people who value arts & theatre complete it.

The deadline for the online survey is the 27th May 2012.  The Survey can also be printed off and returned to us at the theatre by the 27th May. The very short consultation period is due to the requirement for the options appraisal work to be fully completed in June.

The online survey link for individuals is:   https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/stantonbury

Thank you for your co-operation in this - it is greatly appreciated, and as many responses as possible will give the consultants valuable data not only from our customers but also from people who represent the cultural sector in Milton Keynes and beyond.
