Double celebration for Nottingham creative industry

Posted: 30 May 2012 01:15 AM PDT

As you may know this weekend the Wheee! Children's Festival kicks off at Lakeside Arts Centre. As usual there is a broad range of fun creative events for youngsters including interactive theatre, puppetry and dance providing an incredibly magical experience. This is all rounded off at the end of the week with a Family Weekend in Highlands Park.

In conjunction with this sees the UK Premier of Exxopolis, a new Luminarium created by Nottingham  company Architects of Air. This is to celebrate AoA's 20th birthday and Lakeside Arts 10th birthday!

To commemorate the company's long association with Nottingham, Architects of Air, made the decision to involve local people in the "Windows Project" workshops to make the ten intricate stained glass windows in the main dome, inspired by the circular space of the Charter House in Southwell Cathedral!

The participant groups in the workshops were: Nottingham & Nottinghamshire Refugee Forum / Dunkirk and Lenton Partnership Forum/ Lakeside Arts Centre / The Lenton Centre / The Textile Workshop Nottingham / Meadows Partnership Trust / Meadows Art Group / East Midlands Parent Bloggers.

As blogger like to, well, blog here are some greats posts written by the East Midlands Parent Bloggers about the day creating the window (which doubled as a fundraising event for  "Blog it for Babies", raising money for Save the Children – talk about multitasking!)…

PennyLouiseAmanda, Jen, Charlotte, Rosie, Becky, MummylishAnnie, Ruth, Gemma and Emma.

This is just the start of a tour for the Exxopolis as it heads off to provide fun, imaginative experiences for the world. Don't miss it while it is here in Nottingham! More details here.

Posted: 29 May 2012 09:52 AM PDT

This year's Degree shows from across the entire Faculty of Art, Architecture and Design will open to the public on Saturday 2 June, following the private view on the Friday evening. The shows will run until Friday 15 June across both the Lincoln Brayford and Cathedral campuses. Opening hours and locations vary so please visit show website for exact times and locations.

Students from BA (Hons) Animation will be taking to the big screen, showing their films at the Lincoln Odeon Cinema on Thursday 7 June as well as showing in their studio in the Think Tank, and visitors to the Think Tank will be able to see the work of BA (Hons) Product Design students Evie Kemps and Lewis Gaukrodger, who were chosen to take their work to Canton, China as part of the British Council Upcycling project earlier this month.  They will also be exhibiting in October 2012 at the National Centre for Craft and Design as part of the latest mbrela collection.

Highlights this year will include "Pest Control" from BA (Hons) Interactive Design, a digital interactive installation, when man is no more, insects will be the next rulers of the earth, which can be experienced in their studio at Thomas Parker House.  Also following the success of graduating student Jordan Burnett's digital installation at this year's Kinetica Arts Festival in London, "Tweet Lamps" which is currently on loan to the recently launched Mechanical Art and Design Museumat Stratford-upon-Avon will be visible by live web link.

Visitors to Chad Varah House will be able to see the work of third year BA (Hons) Illustration student Nicolla Wallace who is one of only 3 winners from 10s of thousands of entries from all around the world in the International Deviant Art T Shirt Competition winner. Each winner received a large cash prize and 20 units of their t-shirt! Plus, the winning design will be sold in deviantWEAR.

To get the shows off to a good start, this year's Fashion graduates showed their collections on the catwalk at the Engine Shed Lincoln last Friday to a packed house.  Some of their collections will also be shown during Graduate Fashion Week at London's Earl's Court 10-13 June.
