Product Design student upcycle in China

Posted: 24 May 2012 06:18 AM PDT

Product Design Senior Lecturer Dave Bramston and current students Evie Kemps, Lewis Gaukrodger and Jonathan Gill have just returned to Lincoln from a visit to Guangzhou in China to engage in an Upcycling project coordinated by the British Council. The University of Lincoln team was one of ten Universities selected to work on the project with an additional six design institutions from China.

Upcycling is the process where waste materials or products can be utilised to make better materials or products rather than downcycling where waste materials or products are processed to create lesser products or materials. The subject is an important theme within global design ensuring that resources are used effectively and have a minimal impact on the environment.

The creativity of the groups provided plenty of opportunity to present innovative and exciting ideas often inspired from the local Chinese culture.

The project included a visit to a major waste recycling company to appreciate the amount of valuable material that was availble.  Following the insight to the diverse range of materials the groups subsequently explored ways that these waste materials could be utilised to make better products. The groups met with leading academics and designers in China to gain an understanding of directions before presenting their outcomes at an exhibition at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts.

The collection included bags, furniture, lighting and tools and is likely to be presented in the UK later in 2012. The British Council are also looking to publish the outcomes.

The images shown here are taken from the light design created from the waste branches of the injection moulded process. The design called 'Shadow' created shadow wallpaper within the space it was located and was produced using no tools or machinery but by simply clicking the repeated branch forms together.

Designed by Dave Bramston & Evie Kemps (University of Lincoln), Joe Boden (Nottingham Trent University) and Zhang Wei (Tongji University).
