Capital Theatre Festival – Get Involved

Posted: 03 Feb 2012 01:55 AM PST

Capital Theatre Festival is delighted to announce a host of opportunities for people to get involved in this year's event. If you're interested in writing for theatre, making connections, or adding new skills to your CV, Capital is on the lookout for participants and volunteers.

BACKGROUND
Capital is an independent theatre festival to be held from 24-27 May 2012, hosted and supported by mac, Birmingham. It aims to celebrate and promote the work of writers and theatre-makers across the West Midlands and beyond. The Festival will provide an informal platform for artists to showcase new work, explore new ideas and develop new skills. Featuring performances, workshops, discussions, rehearsed readings and networking events, Capital aims to encourage writers to explore new ways of working and making theatre. The Festival is supported by The National Lottery through Arts Council England and the Sir Barry Jackson Trust.

OPPORTUNITIES
There are several ways to get involved, both now, and in the lead-up to the Festival itself. Whether you're a writer just starting out, an experienced playwright looking for new challenges, an audience member looking for a good night out, or a student hoping to gain new skills, there's something for everyone to enjoy. Here are a few examples of how you can take part:

Call for Scripts
We are looking for writers and theatre-makers to submit new scripts for one-hour performances during the Festival in May. There are three slots available and successful applicants will be offered a £1000 bursary to self-produce their shows. Applications are welcomed from playwrights, devisers, writer-performers and theatre-makers of any designation working with the spoken and written word. See website for more details.
Deadline: Monday 5th March, 12noon
Further info: Email writers@capitalplays.co.uk or visit http://capitalplays.co.uk/

High Jump

Talking Birds will be working with Capital Theatre Festival and Writing West Midlands to stage a night of short performances at mac, Birmingham. We are looking for 5 minute pieces (stories, monologues, plays) which engage with the high jump, either metaphorically, or literally.
Deadline: 28th February 2012, 12noon
Further Info: http://www.talkingbirds.co.uk/pages/decathloncalls.asp

VOLUNTEERS
Capital is also looking for volunteers, in partnership with Writing West Midlands, to assist with the Festival in May and to help with the distribution of promotional materials beforehand (both online and in person). Volunteers may be expected to help with:

 Social media updates
 Co-ordinating writers and performers (also, taking care of them if they need it)
 Setting up and tidying venues
 Serving refreshments
 Ushering
 Gathering feedback
 Any last minute emergencies!
A Volunteer Meeting has been scheduled for 27th February 2012, which will provide more information about Capital Theatre Festival and the roles we'll need you to fill, as well as answering any questions you may have. Email joanne@writingwestmidlands.org to register your interest.

John Madin Film Night at Birmingham & Midland Institute

Thumbnail
February 16, 2012 from 6pm to 8:30pm
A tribute to Birmingham architectural icon John Madin Thursday, 16 February 2012, 6 – 8.30pm Join us for screenings of… Six Men: John Madin, Architect (1965)An episode on John Madin, forming part of a 1965 BBC documentary series outlining the lives of 6 influential men of the day. This film illustrates the every day working life of the architect John Madin in the 1960s, but also also sheds a vivid light on his vision of town planning in the 1960s, which belies his impact on the built environment of the Midlands. Windows on Edgbaston (1960)The film shows an interview with John Madin on the Master Plan for the development of the Calthorpe Estate. The video has previously been used at the launch of the 1962 Calthorpe Estate redevelopment, while 'Window on Edgbaston' was also used for an illustrated booklet of the same title. The films will be curated by architect and author of 'Twentieth Century Architects: John Madin', Alan Clawley. Please book with the RIBA West Midlands office:0121 233 2321riba.westmidlands@riba.org£6 entry Location:Dickens RoomBirmingham & Midland InstituteMargaret StreetB3 3SPBirminghamSee More
