ACE deabtes a future for libraries

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 05:44 AM PST

Arts Council England have announced that is to begin consulting with experts on the future of libraries in England.

A programme of research and consultation entitled Envisioning the Library of the Future will begin with an assessment of trends in society which may affect the delivery of library services in the future.

Following on from this, ACE have stated they will undertake a programme of consultation with library experts, and in mid-March 2012, an online consultation will open to all, with a series of short articles prompting public thoughts and opinions on the future of public library services, providing a deep understanding of the public value of libraries.

A final report will consolidate the findings of this research.

Alan Davey, Chief Executive, Arts Council England, said: "This consultation will be invaluable in helping us envisage the shape of that library, sitting at the heart of its community, providing services that local people value and enjoy."

The announcement comes int he wake of widespread library cuts, not only across the West Midlands, but also wider UK, with Councils announcing reduced budgets, reduced opening hours and library closures. A Department for Culture, Media and Sport inquiry is due to continue after parliamentary recess at the end of February 2012.
