John Harper: Recent Work and its Context

Posted: 13 Feb 2012 07:11 AM PST

Avenue Gallery re-opens on 13 February after an extended Christmas break with an exhibition of new photographic work by John Harper, Associate Fellow in Fine Art at The University of Northampton.

John has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally, most recently with a well-received solo show at Spike Island in Bristol, aspects of which will be recreated for the exhibition here alongside new work not shown in public before.

John will present initial work from a new series entitled 'Drawn From Rock', which comprises large-scale photo-collages derived from location work in North Wales.  In this body of work he explores the idea of aggregation, which he relates to both the geomorphic processes which formed the landscape and to the constructed aspects of photography.  He explains: "I use the title 'Drawn from Rock' in almost literal terms - in that each work results from the fragmentation and re-formation of rock features from numerous locations to make works that take  on the appearance of large gestural drawings but which are very complex photo-digital constructs, that take on the scale of their source."

The exhibition will include archive material that reveals the broad range of his influences now and throughout his career, including artists, films, places, books and memories, as well procedural texts and notations which reflect on his working practices.  Through this the exhibition aims to offer some insight into the often elusive aspects of an artist's thoughts and actions, and the influences that shape the media, context and form that their work employs.

John will also be showing work related to his latest book, 'Broken and Breaking Ground', which was published by RGAP in 2008 as a result of a year-long residency he undertook at Fermynwoods Contemporary Arts in Northamptonshire in which he explores perceptions of the local rural landscape.

The exhibition will run from 13 February to 9 March and is open to the public Mondays-Fridays 10am-4pm.  Admission is free.  Avenue Gallery is located in The University of Northampton's Avenue Campus on St. George's Avenue, Northampton NN2 6JD.  For more information about the exhibition please contact the Gallery on 01604 893046 or email gallery@northampton.ac.uk.

Articulation

A Series of three talks by contemporary artists at The University of Northampton.

Throughout March 2012 The University of Northampton's School of The Arts is hosting a series of public lectures by three of Britain's leading contemporary artists. The talks are part of an ongoing programme to promote debate on the issues, actions and attitudes employed in the diversity of contemporary fine art practice.

Chris Drury, John Hilliard and Ian McKeever will be talking about their own work in the context of issues related to the public understanding of contemporary art. What is it? How do we relate to it? And why should we try to understand it?

Each talk will be followed by a question and answer session and last for 90 minutes.

Chris Drury / Tuesday 6 March, 6.30 - 8pm

John Hilliard / Tuesday 13 March, 6.30pm-8pm

Ian McKeever / Tuesday 20 March, 6.30 - 8pm

The talks will take place in the main hall at Avenue Campus from 6.30pm-8pm and are open to anyone. Tickets cost £3 / £2.50 concessions, or free to University of Northampton students.

MK Gallery supports Outside In

Posted: 13 Feb 2012 06:36 AM PST

Outside In is a national initiative of Pallant House Gallery, Sussex. The programme aims to provide a platform for artists who find it difficult to access the art world, either because of mental health issues, disability, health, social circumstance or because their work does not conform to what is normally considered as art.

MK Gallery hosted a successful induction day about the project on 8 February for potential participants from the MK area. Two free workshops will also be hosted in MK Gallery's Project Space on 7 March as part of Outside In's Step Up programme. These artist-led workshops will focus on an exploration of the materials and techniques used by Barbara Hepworth and Frank Auerbach. Visit the Outside In website for more details.

Additionally, Surgery Days, aiming to support artists to get their work online who may not have the skills or facilities to do so otherwise will be held, including a free Surgery Day at MK Gallery Project Space on Wednesday 14 March. To reserve a place call the MK Gallery on 01908 676 600.
