Impression Milton Keynes by Victoria Lamburn

Posted: 14 Feb 2012 09:08 AM PST

Impression Milton Keynes is the result of a almost three year project photographing the English new city of Milton Keynes: its people, landscape and architecture, traversing the entire 34 square miles of the city area in that time and recording everyday life and scenes. Told as a dawn to dusk journey, Impression Milton Keynes records what ultimately is an ordinary day, but if it has any meaning at all it is just to say that the everyday can be exciting, intriguing and surprising.

What is the book of?

The book contains over 300 photos of the city including:

  • Urban, suburban and park landscape

  • Architecture

  • Candid street life

  • and Portraits in the form of residents, workers and some of the original Development Corporation pioneers

All areas of Milton Keynes are covered from New Bradwell to Water Eaton, Wavendon Gate to Tattenhoe, and Brinklow to Loughton -- no part of Milton Keynes has been left out as part of the project. The book only encompasses a part of the project but presents a close to unabridged experience of the city as a whole.

The average impression of Milton Keynes is one of how can there be much there to take photos of? After all there are only roundabouts, concrete cows and well, more concrete. Except this isn't the case, in fact the place which only recently had its fourtieth birthday in 2007 has become a successful, entertaining, exceptionally well designed, green and accessible place to live and work. It is also quirky and at times beguiling that such a place could ever have been possible in the UK, but it does exist and these photos, of the people going about their day, some standing posed of sorts for the camera, the landscapes that you wouldn't expect, the ones you may expect and much more that builds a compelling impression of a living and breathing place.

It is time people really knew what the people from the Milton Keynes Development Corporation set out to do in 1967 and what they laid the successful foundations for. Milton Keynes is something that Britain can and should be proud of.

The book has an introduction from myself as the photographer but also a foreword from Professor Derek Walker, the Chief Architect and Planner of Milton Keynes from 1970 to 1976. In fact many of the Development Corporation stalwarts have been photographed for the book too, it is not often after all that you get the chance to photograph the people that brought a city from an idea on paper, to a reality that over 200,000 people now call home.

Purchase a copy

The book is now available from many retailers and signed copies direct from this website. It is priced at £14.99 and is a 160 page full colour paperback book on heavy silk paper. Orders from this website are now despatching.
