New exhibition at Monks Gallery

Posted: 29 Feb 2012 01:42 AM PST

Lincoln's Monks Gallery proudly presents HeadSpace, a show curated by Tom Cretney and Nicholas Simpson. All artists and curators are either recent Lincoln Fine Art students or tutors based in an artists' run gallery which was set up last year by former students, with the help of former course tutor and Fine Artist John Plowman and current tutor and artist Andrew Bracey.

Andrew is showing a new piece called 'The Six Most Beautiful Minutes in the History of Cinema' In this work Bracey mines the history of cinema to create a raging cacophony of 8 frames per second for 6 minutes of images culled from cinema . 2880 scenes from a full range of genres, countries, tastes and time flash repeatedly. Click here to view.

Like Orson Welles' Don Quixote (of which Giorgio Agamben talks of in his essay which gives this work it's title) the viewer is left with a choice of whether to start slashing away at the screen to halt the constant flow of images.

Artists featured are:

Alan Armstrong
Andrew Bracey
Ian Manicom
Tom Cretney
John Plowman
Nicholas Simpson

The show opens on Thursday, March 15, 2012, 6:00pm until 8:00pm at OVER & OUT Unit 1,old Bargate Works,Milton Street,Lincoln Ln5 8PU

Birmingham REP is 99 years old

Posted: 28 Feb 2012 06:45 AM PST

Last month Birmingham Repertory Theatre celebrated its 99th birthday and to celebrate announced that The Wind in the Willows will be its 2012 Christmas production.

While The REP's Centenary Square building undergoes re-development alongside the Library of Birmingham, the brand new production of Kenneth Grahame's classic story will be presented at the Crescent Theatre in Brindley Place.

The Repertory Theatre in Station Street was opened in 1913, and the building is now known as The Old Rep.  It was founded by Barry Jackson and it rapidly became home to one of most famous and exciting repertory theatre companies in the country.

Stuart Rogers, Executive Director of Birmingham Repertory Theatre says of the Christmas production: 'The Wind in the Willows is a wonderful story and perfect for family audiences.'

The classic riverbank story tells the charming tale of Ratty, Mole, Badger and Toad as they embark on a glorious adventure that leads to Toad Hall, to the perilous wild wood and finally to battle.

The first 99 tickets went on sale on the theatre's 99th birthday at 99p each.

Godiva’s 2012 Cyclopedia vehicle unveiled

Posted: 28 Feb 2012 04:45 AM PST

The Godiva Awakes West Midlands Artist taking the lead project, which is part of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad, is moving forward at great pace.

Last month the Coventry-based company Imagineer Productions, which is behind the project, joined engineers NP Aerospace and Shaw Sheet Metal in unveiling Godiva's extraordinary vehicle which will propel her from Coventry to London in July.

It is the 7m long and 8m high Cyclopedia which has been designed by Coventry based engineers NP Aerospace in partnership with designers from Coventry University and built by Rugby based engineers Shaw Sheet Metal.

The Cyclopedia has been created making the most of the region's technical and engineering knowhow.

Producing a road-going multi-seated cycling machine capable of travel to London and powering Godiva requires a structurally sound and innovative design. The Cyclopedia draws on Coventry's past ingenuity in bicycle design, with NP Aerospace adapting the region's best know cycle the Pashley Cycle, and using contemporary light weight materials, technology and human power in the design.

Claire Maddocks, Director Imagineer Productions said: 'We unveiled to the media the rig that with the aid of our 100 strong cycle team will power Godiva to London.'

Roger Medwell, Design team NP Aerospace said: 'Working on this project has been a fantastic challenge for our engineers, an opportunity to demonstrate how creative engineering can be as well as an opportunity for all the suppliers involved in the project to translate their technical knowhow into something extraordinary.'

On 28 July 2012, Godiva will awake to a spectacular performance involving dancers, aerialists, musicians, pyrotechnicians, carnivalists and 220 young people in a procession marking the unveiling of this Godiva for the modern age.

Godiva Awakes is part of Artists taking the lead, a series of 12 public art commissions across the UK to celebrate the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, funded by Arts Council England.

Businesses reduce arts donations

Posted: 28 Feb 2012 03:58 AM PST

Despite the government push to encourage philanthropy, new research from Arts and Business reveals that business investment in the arts has dropped to its lowest level for seven years.

Companies gave £134.2m in 2010/11, which is £10m down on the previous year - a drop of 7% - and the lowest since 2003/4.

Although businesses are still committed to working with the arts, Arts and Business note they "are not hardwired to do so. Corporate money is a discretionary spend; particularly in hard times."

However, despite this drop in business giving, overall investment in the arts, including money from trusts, foundations and private donors, climbed to £686m -  a rise of £28.5m - with trust and foundation contributions rising by 10% to £15m, and individuals giving £23m more.

This rise in individual philanthropy follows a decline in the previous two years, and is in line with its relatively fast-paced growth since 2001. The 6% increase brings the levels of arts philanthropy to £382.2 million, which is higher than at any point in the past.

Heritage and museums bring in just over half of all private sector support.

Private investment in 2010/11
Heritage: £246m (up £36m)
Museums: £109m (up £14m)
Visual arts: £73m (down £12m)
Theatre: £48m (down £6m)
Music: £38m (no change)
Festivals: £25m (down £1m)
Opera: £23m (up £1m)
Dance: £22m (up £1m)
Other combined arts: £19m (no change)
Arts services: £18m (down £2m)
Community arts: £15m (down £6m)
