Doric String Quartet at The Stables

Posted: 07 Nov 2011 07:12 AM PST

Wednesday 1 February, 8pm

(Free pre-concert talk 7pm)

Tickets £12.50, £17.50, students £5, family of 4 £30 & £40

This quartet is well-known for its affinity with Haydn's music and the Op.20 Sun Quartets were a milestone in the composer's career, at which he reached full maturity in string quartet writing. The Doric has recorded Korngold's third string quartet to rave reviews, so is no stranger to this piece. Schubert's masterpiece Death and the Maiden features a heart-rending slow movement based on his song of the same name. It is a piece of great intensity and is one of the best-loved string quartets of all time.

"Haydn and the Doric are a perfect match. This is an ensemble ... that plays Haydn's music with spirit, illuminating its blend of wit and sophistication, grace and vivacity, cunning and seemingly effortless spontaneity." The Sunday Telegraph

Face Value: An Exhibition of Work by Anna Berry @ Madcap

Posted: 31 Jan 2012 05:02 AM PST

Feb 1st - 28th

Private View - Feb 3rd from 7pm - Open to all.

Anna studied Philosophy & Experimental Psychology at Oxford University.  Having spent several years in publishing and teaching, she now works as a commercial photographer.  She has exhibited pieces at galleries including The Royal West of England Academy and The Strand Gallery, London, and is a member of The Catchlight Collective. Anna exists in Milton Keynes.

Anna's work is concerned with the nature of reality. It questions our assumptions about the world as we perceive it, asking "What is this underneath? What is it really?".  It explores whether conscious perceptions are in fact misinterpreted conceptions.

Face Value explores these ideas through two media - photography and sculpture. A series of dark portraits capture thoughts, emotions, or character traits leaking out from the subject's inner reality, contrasting with the consciously-controlled faces that they present to the outside world.  In some instances, these are outtakes from commercial projects; images which portray the subject very differently from how they would choose to be seen.

Meanwhile, a collection of paper sculptures using reincarnated texts examines how function (as opposed to content) can create identity; how one object can be transformed into another without changing state. The inclusion of plants underlines the dynamism and fluidity of reality, and how divorced the nature of a thing can be from its constituent parts.

Patricia Routledge: Facing The Music

In conversation with Edward Seckerson

Thursday 2 February, 8pm

Tickets £16, £17.50

It is one of the best kept secrets in show business that Patricia Routledge trained as a singer and had considerable success in musical theatre, both here and in the USA. Her many awards include a Tony for her Broadway performance in the musical Darling of the Day (1967) and a Laurence Olivier Award for Leonard Bernstein's Candide (Old Vic 1989). Her one woman show Come For The Ride toured the UK in 1988 and in 1992 she played Nettie Fowler in the National Theatre's acclaimed production of Carousel. Writer and broadcaster Edward Seckerson's diligent discovery of her 'musical life' makes for a fascinating evening.

The Galleons at The Stables

Posted: 07 Nov 2011 07:25 AM PST

Friday 3 February, 8.45pm Stage 2

Tickets £10 in advance, £12 on the door

The Galleons hail from sunny Brighton via London, Lincoln, The Isle of Wight and Latvia.

Following an excellent response to the radio play of their first demo, the band set about creating melodic, atmospheric and toe-tappingly catchy songs that blend traditional British folk music, sounds of the 60s folk revival, modern merchants of gloom such as Low and Radiohead and the occasional Latvian farming song. So far they have garnered praise from the south coast's leading promoters, recorded in a dungeon, played at some great festivals and supported the much-feted Dark Dark Dark.

And what can she do? She can’t run, jump, skate, anything. She can hardly stand.

However she can do something he can’t. She can swim. In fact, she can do it rather well. There was a time she did it at the Olympic Games in London. No! Not those Olympic Games. The other ones in 1948....when the athletes had to bring their own towels!
