Arts Council appoint new AELCU Director

Posted: 06 Feb 2012 03:39 AM PST

Arts Council England have named Scott Furlong as the organisation's new Acquisitions, Exports, Loans and Collections Unit (AELCU) Director.

Scott, who previously worked as Head of Collections Management at the National Maritime Museum, steps into the newly created role later this month.

The AELCU is a specialist unit whose functions transferred to the Arts Council from the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) in October 2011. The AELCU 'safeguards and enriches the cultural property of the nation' by awarding Accreditation and Designation to museums and collections; administering Government Indemnity which provides a no-cost alternative to insurance for loans on public exhibition; recommending which vital works of art and items of cultural significance should remain in the country; and advising on the acceptance and allocation of cultural objects in lieu of inheritance tax.

Scott has been Head of Collections Management at the National Maritime museum for the past five years, where he was responsible for managing and providing access to the museum's three million collection items across five sites. He has worked for the museum since 2003, acquiring significant experience in managing collections, acquisitions, loans and disposal activity, all of which will inform his new role at the Arts Council. He previously worked for more than seven years with the Royal Collection prints and drawings at Windsor Castle.

Scott said: "It's great to be joining Arts Council England at this exciting time for culture, and to have the opportunity to work with such a diverse range of organisations. I look forward to leading the excellent AELCU teams in London and Birmingham in delivering their essential cultural property and collections work."
