Pentabus Studio Launch

Posted: 03 May 2013 05:02 AM PDT

This month Pentabus Theatre launches the Pentabus Studio; a new approach to how this rurally based company develops its ideas, plays and artists.

The new Pentabus Studio is a physical space: at our base on a farm in Shropshire we now have a rehearsal room, a performance studio for workshops, readings and productions, and a number of writers' rooms that allow playwrights the time and space to develop their work. The Studio is also a creative space: as well as continuing to accept script submissions, Pentabus will launch writing workshops for adults and a Young Writers Group aimed at 16-25 year olds to support the best new work from the next generation of playwrights. Above all the Pentabus Studio is an open space: a way to support theatre makers both locally and nationally to step outside their usual working practice and develop their imaginations in a supportive, creative environment.

Pentabus is a contemporary theatre company producing new plays about the rural world for both local and national audiences. Created back in 1974 with the purpose of making creative interventions in a forgotten corner of England, today the company's horizons and artistic outlets continually expand as its work reaches diverse audiences all over the UK. Pentabus has always offered writers a unique environment in which to write their plays; the new Pentabus Studio now formalises and develops this thinking.

It's well known that people in rural areas, both young and old, struggle to have the same access to top quality arts activities that their urban contemporaries enjoy. Pentabus makes a real commitment to the creative health of the countryside, encouraging artists to draw from it, and urging local communities to participate in it. Artistic Director Elizabeth Freestone drives a vision committed to this ethos: We're in a unique location here, based on a farm in Shropshire. We have a beautiful building with great facilities. The Studio is a way of opening up our site to artists and audiences. We'll support writers developing new ideas, providing them with a stimulating, inspiring place to work, as well as hosting readings, workshops and works in progress showings to allow our local audience to engage with professional contemporary theatre right on their doorstep.'

What Next? Midlands Meeting Thursday 9 May

Posted: 03 May 2013 04:59 AM PDT

Please join Catherine Mallyon from the RSC and Joanna Reid from the Belgrade Theatre at the RSC's home in Stratford on 9 May 2013from 4.30pm to 6pm for the second What Next? meeting of Midlands arts leaders.

As many of you will know, What Next? is an informal network of senior people in the arts, which has been making the case for arts and culture and working together to find new ways of engaging the public in an informed national conversation.

The London-based group has been going for a while now and regional groups are starting to develop.   Some of us attended a first meeting in the Midlands, chaired by Joanna at the Belgrade, in February, where Nicola Thorold talked about the national group.  The February meeting generated much discussion about the role of arts and culture in the regions and ideas about ways we would work together.

We agreed it would be great to hold a second meeting for a wider group of Midlands arts and cultural leaders in May, directly after the national What Next? conference on 29 April, which took place yesterday.

We will use the ideas and inspirations of the national conference to inform an agenda for the regional event next week.  We hope you'll join us.

If you would like to join us in Stratford on 9 May, or would like to keep in touch about What Next Midlands please reply topressassistant@rsc.org.uk .

The Lasting Sense back in Brum – 3rd May, 7pm

Posted: 03 May 2013 04:57 AM PDT

"A brave and (in every sense) revealing performance." * * * * onestoparts.com

FRED, probably Birmingham's newest theatre company, is bringing new play The Lasting Sense of Sudden back to Birmingham for one night only this week, before setting off to Dublin.

The play, which premiered at last month's SHOUT Festival, is making audiences laugh, cry, become infuriated, and just damn angry across the UK. It's a 60 minute roller coaster ride; a bitter-sweet exploration of coming out, gaining acceptance, and learning to accept oneself in the twenty-first century. It's about how one fleeting moment may change lives forever, and totally reshape futures. It's based on real-life experiences collected by FRED through interviewing members of the LGBTQ community in Birmingham and the West Midlands.

These are universal tales of love, loss and loneliness, but also of self-discovery, through family, friends and partnerships than can resonate with everyone. Written by Jonathan ap Emrys and performed by four actors who take on multiple roles, the play moves across a range of experiences. Some are positive, some are negative, some give cause for hope, and some are frightening.

Robert F. Ball, FRED's artistic director, says: "This has been a fascinating project to work on. From day one of interviewing people through to the dress rehearsals, it's been a privilege to work on such a stimulating piece of theatre.

"Whilst so much is immeasurably better nowadays for the LGBTQ community, there is still prejudice, bigotry and hatred in some sections of society that needs to be tackled and eradicated. Perhaps our contribution to the debate will help in a small way."

Reviewing the production, Lichfield Live writes: "[The] wait was worth it for . . . this exquisite play. Clever editing and . . . inspired direction . . . made these deeply personal stories moving, immediate, believable, and infinitely human over and over again."

Audience feedback on the show includes comments such as: "[The play] floored me. Complex, moving, tender, terrible … A (traumatic) triumph." "Really enjoyed @FRED_Theatre "The Lasting Sense of Sudden" tonight … Nice work from cast and @robertballuk".

The Lasting Sense of Sudden can be seen on Friday at the AE Harris building in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter at 7.00pm as part of the PAIL Festival. It will then move on to Dublin where it plays as part of the 10th International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival. Further details on http://www.fred-theatre.co.uk.

WOW! Festival 2013 – Extended Deadline

Posted: 03 May 2013 04:54 AM PDT

6 weeks, 6 Wednesdays, lots of performance!

Where?

Want to earn a bit of cash or free rehearsal space for you and your company? The Public Art Centre www.thepublic.com in collaboration with Freshold Theatre and Tesco is currently curating WOW! (Watch Out Wednesdays!) – An eclectic festival of street performance in the heart of West Bromwich. WOW! Will be held over six Wednesday's during the summer holidays outside The Public building and we are looking to pull a diverse programme of performance together.

What we are looking for…

Want to be involved? We'd love to hear from theatre companies, artists, story tellers, performers, dancers and general creative folk! The theme and focus for the summer is Fun Factory, so ideally we are looking for pieces that consider children or visual performance in particular. WOW! is happening alongside the launch of the new shopping site in West Bromwich and has been commissioned to inspire art in Sandwell. Remember some audiences may only stay and watch for ten minutes so please consider what they may see of your performance in this short time. Pieces can be as short as ten minutes but no longer than one hour. Please consider how your piece will work in an outside space (we cannot rig lighting but simple sound tech support is possible) and do keep in mind that we cannot offer the use of any props or set, so you must be able to provide these yourself. You can send up to two ideas for the festival. It's a great opportunity to try out new work or a performance you think is already perfect for outdoor performance.

How will you benefit?

This is a funded event and therefore we can offer artists / companies one of two things; either we can give you a fee (£90 – £120) for your work or we can arrange to give you FREE rehearsal space at The Public  for your later projects which we will arrange with you post performance. The Public is a huge space and has a large capacity theatre so rehearsal time in these will save you a whole lot of money if you are working on projects or have anything coming up. Please visithttp://www.thepublic.com/our-rooms to check out the various rooms that may be available to you and/or your company. In addition we can offer simple sound tech support and the opportunity to create long term relationships with The Public which you may find useful for later work.

Interested?

If you think you may have an idea suitable for the WOW! Festival, then please download the application form from http://www.fresholdtheatre.co.uk/?p=808 and send it in to hannah@fresholdtheatre.co.ukIf you have two ideas please send them on separate forms. Deadline is Monday 20th May. Successful applicants will be informed by Monday 27th May at the latest.  Also, if you have any questions before you apply, please do contact us and we will answer you as soon as possible! We look forward to hearing from you!
