A new online magazine for children & young people

Posted: 29 May 2013 04:33 AM PDT

Write On! 2013Over the past couple of months we've been planning the launch of a new online project for children and young people in the West Midlands following the ending of Write On! Online in March 2013. After several meetings and many email conversations between me, Jonathan (our Chief Executive), Sam (our website expert) and the writer chosen to work with us on this exciting new project, William Gallagher, we are almost (but not quite!) ready to launch Write On! Magazine!

This online magazine will be published termly, with the first one featuring writing from some members of our creative writing groups for those aged 8-16, the Writing Squads. Future issues will feature writing from other age groups as this first one is just for those aged 12-16, and will be open for submissions from all young people in the West Midlands.

It's been a fascinating experience to develop a new website; from choosing the colours to designing the logo and web banner, choosing what the structure of the site will look like and how it will work, and then after making it look lovely; we had to gather the writing from the young people who wanted to be involved. So far we have 25 pieces ready for publication from young writers from Birmingham, Coventry, Stoke-on-Trent, Hereford and Rugby with titles including The Seven Dwarves (featuring Snow White), Riches in the Waiting Room, Tolpuddle Martyrs and Old Tree. Each young writer will also receive feedback from William who is the magazine's editor, to help them develop their writing skills.

Write On! MagazineAs the final structure is resolved and we add in all of the content, seeing it all come together is a joy and I really look forward to seeing the finished result in mid-late June.

Look out on our website for more details about this magazine when it is launched. If you know of any children or young people with a passion for creative writing who'd like to submit their writing for inclusion in the magazine, please email me at joanne[at]writingwestmidlands.org to be kept up-to-date with the submission deadlines. You can also join our Young Writers & Schools Mailing List to find out about upcoming opportunities from us and other organisations for young writers in the region.
