Birmingham Playwrights to perform first public show in 23 years

Posted: 30 May 2013 11:29 PM PDT

For the 23rd consecutive year, students from the Masters Playwriting Studies course at the University of Birmingham are presenting extracts from their final project plays in the annual Playwrights' Workshop, and for the first time ever they will be taking them outside the University to perform in a working theatre!

Following the success of their show 10×10:the Journey Home at The Old Joint Stock Theatre back in March, the ten playwrights of 2013 are now serving up more bite-sized theatre – this time in the form of twenty-minute extracts from plays they have worked on throughout the year-long course.

The MRes Playwriting Studies course is Britain's leading programme dedicated to the craft of the dramatist. It was founded by internationally renowned playwright Professor David Edgar and is now convened by professional playwright Fraser Grace. Alumni from the programme have embarked on successful careers in theatre, television and radio, and include word-renowned playwright Sarah Kane. Course convenor Grace is delighted with this year's program, "Our directors this year are all top people; Gwenda Hughes, Adam Ledger and Di Sherlock have pulled together a crack team of professional actors from near and far to perform rehearsed readings of some really exciting plays."

See the Workshop on Saturday 1st June at Old Joint Stock Theatre, Temple Row West, Birmingham. Tickets are just £5 and allow audience members to see as many of the plays as they want throughout the day. Tickets can be purchased online at www.oldjointstocktheatre.co.uk or via the Box Office on 0121 200 0946.

Playwrights' Workshop 2013 is supported by University of Birmingham; the Department of Drama & Theatre Arts; Circles of Influence and the Old Joint Stock Theatre.
