Bringing Artists into View

Artists and makers across Nottinghamshire have joined forces for Open Studios Notts events in May and June; inviting you to see art, buy art and meet artists.

Open Studios Notts Exhibition at Rufford Gallery

Rufford Gallery is showcasing selected works in a selling exhibition which includes a map of where and when you can visit events. The exhibition was put together by Notts artist Lucianna Gallucci who is one of the Harley Studio Group based on the Welbeck Estate

You can pick up a brochure featuring all the events from Rufford or from your local library and other outlets!

What are Open Studios?

Artists and makers open their studios, explain and share their working methods, and offer their artwork for sale. Visitors get to meet them and find out about their ideas and inspiration!

What is an Open Studios Event?

Artists organise themselves to open their studios together during a period of the year. This can be from one day to several weeks or weekends, often additional exhibitions and events are part of Open Studios.

Open studios events come in various shapes and sizes; artists in a cluster or trail opening individual studios, artists hosting others in their studios, an exhibition at a venue in the area, a pop up art shop, a group of houses hosting work from artists, a festival focus. The term Open Studios is used for all of these and similar events such as Art Weeks, Art Trails, Art Tours, etc.

Open Studios History

Visiting artist's studios and workshops has a tradition long before National galleries and art institutions came into being. Organised artists groups in some form may have always been a part of the art market, although the modern 'open studio' movement as it is known now, came into being in the UK around the 1970s with Artists At Home in Chiswick & West London, and Cambridge Open Studios being amongst the first recorded.

Since the 1970s many artist groups have developed this style of event. Oxfordshire Artweeks is currently the largest with over 1,000 artists taking part.

Open Studios Network and Communications

Open Studios Network was set up as a Limited Company in 2006 to network organisers and events to share experience, commercial and best practices. www.openstudioscomms.org promotes events across the country and beyond.
