Posted: 10 Oct 2011 05:59 AM PDT Grade II listed and hidden away in the north west corner of the Cathedral Close. Conduit head and pump. 1786. Ashlar. Pump encased in tall square structure, with adjoining low platform. Pump casing has band below round niche to each face and simple domed cap; slit for handle to west, spout to north. Platform has inset stone basin. The conduit was established c1140-7, the supply being augmented in 1259, an early example of a piped water supply. (from listed buildings online) |
