Links Round-Up

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 11:54 AM PDT

GameCity is now in full swing, and if that's the sort of thing that interests you, but you still haven't been down to the Old Market Square to check it out, then you've only only got one day left – so get a move on!  I know we promised last week not to mention this again in a links round-up (sorry, John!), but I thought it was worth giving a mention to considering that it finishes tomorrow.  We'll have a proper post on it soon.  Moving on…

In case you haven't already heard, UK Young Artists is hosting its' first World Event Young Artists show in Nottingham in September 2012, as a finale to the Cultural Olympiad.  A little short notice, perhaps, but the deadline for applications has been extended until Halloween, so if you're aged between 18 and 30 and are involved in pretty much any creative discipline ('from music, dance, theatre and spoken word, to film, visual arts and gastronomy' is the official line) and fancy representing the UK in an event based in Nottingham, and have work ready to present, then there's still time to submit and application (and pay your £20 submission fee).

This weekend also brings the return of the Mayhem Horror Film Festival to the Broadway cinema.  The festival actually started on Thursday, but you've still got until Monday to catch some spooky cinema.  It looks like the festival film listings page on the Broadway's site is down at the moment, but a PDF of the line-up is available.

Curiosity Haus are hosting an Indie Market at Bunkers Hill this Saturday, too.  Looks like it's shaping up to be a busy weekend!  I used to live opppsite Bunkers Hill and would welcome any excuse to spend a Saturday there, but – alas – I'm working away over the weekend.  If you're popping down then there's a Facebook event page for you to RSPV and/or share with anyone else you think would be interested in craft, design, vintage, cakes, gifts, or live music.

BBC Performing Arts Fund announces Community Dance scheme winners

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 08:52 AM PDT

The BBC Performing Arts Fund has awarded over £172,000 to dance groups across the UK through its Community Dance scheme.

Grants of up to £5,000 have been awarded to 41 not-for-profit groups in order for them to carry out training, attract new audiences, encourage new members and raise their profile in their communities.

The scheme also encourages groups to take on more challenging projects through commissions and working collaboratively with other local organisations as well as professional artists.

The successful groups were able to demonstrate that their projects were challenging and ambitious yet achievable, that their project would develop the group and its members, and that the group would collaborate with and have an impact on the wider community.

Three organisations from the West Midlands received grants:

Central Youth Theatre (£3,800)
• Multi-generational project introducing members to forms of social dance
carried out in Wolverhampton across the years – including 1920's ragtime,
Northern soul, and ballroom.
• Creating a touring performance work that the young people will take into old
people's homes and community venues.

Fanga Drum 'n' Dance (£3,000)
• African dance and drumming group.
• To develop the group's dance skills, raise their aspirations and possibly
progress onto college courses to gain formal qualifications.
• Working with Dudley Age UK, libraries and schools.

Rainbow Sunshine Company (£5,000)
• Group with a range of disabilities who would like to work with Wolfgang
Stange, Artistic Director of Amici Dance Theatre company.
• Create a new piece for the group to perform at Bedworth Civic Hall.
• Will work with local dancers and train up volunteers.
