Labour of love for artist Liisa....

Posted: 20 Oct 2011 01:35 AM PDT

TONIGHT’S the night when the cream of Milton Keynes’ businesses will find out if they’ve won an accolade for their excellence.

The Doubletree by Hilton at stadium:mk will see a gathering of the new city’s business community for the annual Milton Keynes & North Bucks Chamber of Commerce event.

The category and overall winners will take away a unique sculpture designed by artist Liisa Clark, of Abstrakt. She works in Lanercost Crescent, Monkston, Milton Keynes.

Liisa has worked with chamber chief executive Rita Spada for the last five years, designing awards which symbolise boldness, strength and courage, power and vision as well as protection.

Liisa said: “This imagery is something that applies to our wonderful city Milton Keynes.

“I am extremely proud and honoured to be asked each year to be involved with such an important project.

“It is not just about creating a beautiful piece of artwork; it is about creating something that will inspire people, while also acknowledging all of the hard work that people do in our city.”

This year is the second sculpture in a triptych based on the all powerful gryphon, a mythological combination of both the king of beasts, the lion and the king of the birds, the eagle.

Liisa said: “Not only does it have to convey the right message, but you have to bear in mind how important the award is going to be to the winner.

“I then create a single master sculpture in clay. This may take anything from a few weeks to a few months depending on how happy I am with the overall look. I remember one year I made almost 15 different sets of wings as I just was not happy with the overall look and they sat on the body and how they held themselves. They needed to be majestic, and with patience and lots of experimenting I created a set of wings I was extremely happy with.”

The whole process takes a few months from start to finish. Liisa added: “I always feel so much pride when I see the faces of the winners when they are presented with their awards. Months of hard work are brought to a wonderful conclusion when the award is placed in the winners hands.”

Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence Application

Posted: 19 Oct 2011 01:45 PM PDT

CALL FOR PROPOSALS
The mission of the Roman Witt Residency Program is to support the production of new work with assistance from the School of Art & Design community. The program awards one residency per academic year for a visiting artist/designer to work at the school to develop a new work in collaboration with students and faculty. A centerpiece of the residency is the open studio, a centrally located studio space that is part of the school's main gallery where the resident carries out work in a public domain. This public visibility of the artist's process is intended as an exemplary teaching tool for the school as a whole. The residency is expected to culminate in the realization of the proposed work, as well as a presentation that summarizes the process and work accomplished.
GUIDELINES FOR WITT RESIDENCY PROPOSALS
Eligibility
The Witt Residency is open to both established and emerging artists/designers. The Witt residency provides students an alternative learning opportunity to engage with practicing artists who make use of resources across campus, therefore the ideal candidate must value collaboration, have good social and communication skills and be interested in generating creative partnerships across disciplines.  It is the goal of the Witt Residency to foster an atmosphere of inventive creative activity that extends throughout the University community.
Honorarium
Witt Residents receive an honorarium of $20,000 for up to twelve weeks in residence served over an academic year. There is flexibility in how the time in residence is apportioned. In addition to the honorarium, residents will be provided with housing, studio space, and up to $5,000 funding support for project materials.  The School encourages applications from individuals as well as from creative teams however, please be advised that the resources listed above are finite, including the travel budget.  If teams apply the expectation is that the award will be shared between its members.

How To Apply
The Witt Residency Program's application process is conducted using SlideRoom, an online review system.  Applicants register and submit their application materials on the SlideRoom website using A&D's portal.  SlideRoom is web-based, so all applicants need is an Internet connection and a modern web browser - there is nothing to download or install.  Applicants with prepared digital files can quickly upload their submission within minutes. If you cannot use Slideroom and would like to make alternate arrangements, please email Chrisstina Hamilton at chrissti@umich.edu.
