Visual Arts in Cumbria and Lancashire – a new meaty report

    Posted: 05 Oct 2011 02:21 AM PDT

An interesting 2011 consultancy report on the value of the visual arts in Cumbria and Lancashire (PDF link). They have to contend with a similarly snobby and sharp urban/rural split, like Staffordshire. It's not too bad, as such reports go — reasonably meaty and not much boilerplate. Although the the authors do wheel out Richard Florida rather uncritically at one point, and some of the terminology is necessarily 'officialese' since it's not really aimed at artists and creatives.

My simplified digest of the conclusions…

    * Address the lack of understanding of the visual arts among local and regional officials.

    * Emphasise pre-war local examples of collecting and building around the arts, to show the long-term benefits of art.

    * Show the bottom-line impact of the arts on regional economic development.

    * Educate officials about the shakiness of certain types of 'impact' metrics.

    * Train organisations to engage effectively with local councillors.

    * Encourage respect for artist failure, but also push for the idea that standards can be raised and that art can be criticised.

    * Co-ordinate, concentrate and cluster media/press visits. (To which I might add, consider blogs as the press).

    * Plan ahead for brighter days, now.

    Evaluating small arts websites

    Posted: 05 Oct 2011 12:53 PM PDT

Chris Unitt blogs on evaluating online success for small arts organisations. The comments on the post point out that using Google Analytics is not sufficient for funded museums and arts organisations to meet government requirements on statistics reporting, since GA is not deemed an "ABCe 2-star accredited analytics tool".

    BBC cuts Birmingham again

    Posted: 13 Oct 2011 05:44 AM PDT

The BBC is set to cut Birmingham media production yet again. 100 jobs in "Factual programming for BBC television and Radio 4″ could trundle off to Bristol and Cardiff, almost completing the hollowing out of national BBC programme production in the West Midlands. Birmingham's Dave Harte has commentary that links such moves to the city's digital strategy, or apparent lack of it, since Dave reports that the Council leader has…

"side-lined the City's digital agenda to the completely uninterested Deputy Leader Councillor Tilsley".

Creative/media tops age 14-15 careers poll

    Posted: 17 Oct 2011 05:24 AM PDT

An interesting new survey of schoolkids aged 14-15, asking which careers they think they might find interesting. "Media" came top of their list, "creative industries and the arts" came second. Charities, transport, government jobs, environment, and energy all scrape pitifully along the bottom of the rankings. Teenagers are also choosing what they perceive as the 'easy' options for their exams. As with all such surveys, one would want to know exactly how it was carried out. After 'the careers assembly' in the school hall? In the street on a Saturday? By filling in forms sent to schools? Was there a good demographic and geographic spread in the respondents?

Music: Review: Dudley International Piano Competition, at Dudley Concert Hall

    Posted: 21 Oct 2011 12:00 AM PDT

The finals of the 32nd Dudley International Piano Competition proved a glittering occasion, bringing back the CBSO to the tremendous acoustic, immediate and straight, of what we still remember as Dudley Town Hall, and attracting a crowd of nearly 100 last-minute audience-members queuing to buy tickets atthe door. No town can afford to ignore a boost such as this, and I trust the local municipal fathers will be taking this success on board.

    Rightlion

This is, of course, the rightlion, by Tony Cassidy, www.flickr.com/photos/tonycassidy/428424569/

Today's Roundup won't be mentioning GameCity (because we covered it last week) nor Christmas (nuff said).  It will however be drawing your attention to:

Fancy writing about art or culture?  We are always interested in potential new bloggers, drop a line to editor@creativenottingham.com.  If you are an artist or running a creative business and you would like to be a Guest Blogger over a fortnight, drop us a line to the same address.  If you fancy reviewing theatre or comedy for the great local publication LeftLion, have a look at their job description.  Note that you will be paid the same as for writing for Creative Nottingham.

If you think you will be inspired by the technology at GameCity (oops) and you want to explore your inner electronic designer first, get down to Hackspace on Saturday for the Arduino (no, I don't either) Boot Camp.  To cover the costs, the tickets are £43.05, and you will need your own laptop.

If the virtual reality of GameCity (but note, no Father Christmas reference) is not to your taste, how about surrealism?  NTU's Professor Lei Cox has assembled the fruit of 26 years of investigation into achieving surrealism in a free exhibition at the Bonnington Gallery in town. The exhibition entitled Twenty-six years later (a journey into fiction and back again) runs until 11 November and new photographs, new video installations and some retrospective video and photography pieces.

Finally, does your auntie live in Erewash? If so, that might be enough to get you priority treatment when you apply for (small) funding as part of the Art in Empty Shop Scheme for Long Eaton and Ilkeston, the rEive initiative.  More details from Creative Greenhouse, with contacts and application information – deadline 4 November.

Editor: one out of two isn't very good.  New blogger next week, please.
