Graduate success in USA

Posted: 14 Oct 2011 03:10 AM PDT

[Fran Knight's Milk Light]

Fran Knight graduated this summer with a BA (Hons) in Product Design. Fran was one of the lucky students to have her work selected to exhibit at both Milan and New York earlier this year.

Now working in her native Nottingham, Fran's work is about to go out to the USA again and will be exhibited at the NeoCon East Fair in Baltimore USA (2 - 3 November 2011). This is a major US trade show: the premier design exposition for commercial interiors on the East Coast.

We wish Fran the best of luck and every success.

Lincoln ad graduates create 'famous' work

Posted: 14 Oct 2011 03:39 AM PDT

Following last summer's D&AD New Blood, Creative Advertising graduate team Björn Conradi and Sophie Browness managed to land a placement at world famous ad agency BBH as part of the BBH Barn programme. Here's Sophie reporting back:-

"As part of our placement at BBH we were given the brief 'Do something good, famously.' After a long think about what good we could do, the London riots started and we knew this was our opportunity. Working with fellow 'BBH Barner' Omid Fard we set up a blog to help 89 year old barber Aaron Biber rebuild his shop that was destroyed by looters. After a long night of tweeting and getting the word out there, it spread.

"In a couple of days the campaign reached over 2.5 million twitter impressions, and raised £35,000 to get Aaron back in business. 'Keep Aaron Cutting' was featured in just about every national newspaper, the shop was swarming with TV news crews and even got a spot in Campaign.

"Boris Johnson popped by to be told his parting will make him go bald and footballer Peter Crouch (an ex BBH intern) visited for a trim. We wanted to show that amongst all the bad press that social media was receiving, that it can be used for good. And luckily enough we did it rather famously too."

And VERY famous it became too. The project was featured in The Guardian; Daily Mail; The Wall Street Journal; ITV; and Tottenham Hotspur's website to name but a few.
You can find out more about the project at the BBH Labs and Keep Aaron Cutting websites.

Photography graduate Inigo Taylor talks about life after uni

Posted: 14 Oct 2011 08:30 AM PDT

BA (Hons) Contemporary Lens Media graduate, Inigo Taylor graduated from Lincoln in 2010. He contacted the University recently to update us on what he has been doing since then.

"At the minute I am not working within photography as such, I am however having my photography published in an international journal on 3 November (Black & White Photography magazine). The above photograph was taken in May this year; it was taken at a catholic procession in the village of Munxar on Gozo, and forms part of my Maltese collection which will be featured in the magazine.

"When the work is published I am going to apply for an artists grant with the Maltese arts council to complete my photographic project on Malta. I have been working on a casual basis on the Mediterranean island of Gozo for the last 8 months, which has allowed me to save sufficient funds to go on a month trip to central Turkey at the end of October to photograph in a region called Cappadocia.

"I have really enjoyed working on the island but obviously photography and starting a career is my main focus. I have several opportunities next year in photography jobs that all have a preference for photography degrees. It seems that a career within an industry like photography more often than not does not start overnight and I think that having the patience and determination to seek it out are as important as the qualifications and experience we have as graduates".

Above image is taken from Inigo's exhibition last year in Malta. Look out for Inigo's latest images in the November B&W Photo mag.

Links Round-Up: Events In and Around Nottingham

Our Links Round-up today starts in the centre of Nottingham.  The programme of events at the New Art Exchange includes talks, workshops, tours, and more.  Full details are on their website, but I would just like to point out two:

  • this afternoon, 18 October, 5 – 7 pm, there is a Visual Arts workshop for Young People aged 11 – 25 that uses the speech 'Aint I a women' by women rights activist Sojourn Truth as a stimulus to create visual responses. Sojourn Truth was born a slave in New York about 200 years ago, but escaped to freedom.
  • A Pinhole Camera workshop, this Saturday, 22 October, 2 – 4 pm. Described as family friendly, participants will "will turn old drinks cans into working pinhole cameras", it leaves ambiguous whether the adults bring full drinks cans and make them empty first (but I suspect not). Photos on the day are developed in the darkroom – who needs an Iphone or a Canon to be a photographer?

If you need to get out more, I would recommend a trip or two to Lincoln which is about to enjoy its first ever Digital Culture Festival from 21 to 29 October.  Going under the name of Frequency Festival 2011, there are displays, performances, debates, networking opportunities and more. There nicely laid out website provides a mailing list option and they even have their own ringtone, entitled White Noise in the Key of F, in both MP3 and md4 format.

I f you need to get out more, but want to go north rather than east, our former guest bloggers the Harley Gallery are always worth a visit.  Particularly between 29 October and 24 December, for the exhibition of 20th Century British Art from Welbeck Abbey.  This is the first public exhibition of the collection built up by William Parente who will be giving a talk about it on 3 December (talk tickets £7). Among the artists shown are John Napper, Dame Elizabeth Frink, Paul Nash and LS Lowry.

And if you would rather work on your entry for their Open Exhibition next January, and a possible place in William Parente's exhibition thirty years hence, you have until the first week in December. The theme is "H is for …..". Details and the entry form on their website.  I look forward to seeing the results, in 2012 if not 2041.

Creative England's Film Culture Fund opens for applications on Monday 17 October 2011, with a total of £490,000 delegated Lottery funds from the BFI to distribute in the first round.

The Film Culture Fund aims to boost access for audiences to a wide range of film content in the English regions outside of London, to enrich audiences' experience through education opportunities, and to bring the unique resources of regional screen heritage into wider film provision.

It is looking to support the provision and interpretation of both specialised and mainstream film in England, by investing in:

- audience development within the film exhibition sector
- film education activities which are linked to and support film exhibition
- infrastructure (e.g. cinemas, film festivals, film societies and other platforms)
- the acquisition, preservation and conservation of and access to regional screen heritage.

Applications are now invited from cinemas, film archives, film festivals, mobile cinemas, film societies and other eligible organisations working in the English regions outside of London.

Awards will range from £2,000 - £50,000 depending on the project. Funded activity can include programming, education, reaching under-served audiences and regional screen heritage.

Creative England's Head of Film Culture Jay Arnold, said: "I'm very pleased to open Creative England's first funding scheme. We're looking for strong project ideas that we can get behind to help nurture film culture in all its variety, to the benefit of local audiences around the country, and we're interested in hearing from organisations from all parts of the English regions."

Eddie Berg, the BFI's Director of Partnerships, said: "Creative England will be crucial delivery partners for the BFI's Forward Plan and we welcome this clear commitment of support for the exhibition, archive and film education sectors, whose work is so important to audiences across England."

The deadline for applications is midday on 28 November 2011.
