TEI 2012 Art Explorations Submission Deadline Extended
The submission deadline for TEI 2012 Art Explorations has been extended to November 30th, 4:59 pm PST 2011.
About TEI Art Explorations
The Art Explorations track at TEI 2012 invites interactive artworks that explore the intersections between rich materiality, sensory & performative interaction and digital and computational expression. The work should be tangibly evocative, thought provoking and content rich. Artworks can employ interactivity through digital installations, technology-enriched fashion and textiles, and interactive products and services. Art Explorations welcomes work from a wide range of practitioners in areas such as interaction design, art, or research, including submissions from students and independent practitioners.
Submissions should meet the following criteria:
•        Relevant: The work must have a tangible aspect, in the form of an installation, object or art piece with material components.
•        Technological: It must involve computational technology in some aspect of its form or function.
•        Aesthetic: It must incorporate an intentional sense of form determined through craftsmanship (computational, mediated, physical) and communicate its intent effectively through form, function and affect or experience.
•        Creative: It must be inventive, in its concept, technical architectural or physical form.
Submissions will be selected according to the following criteria:
•        Concept: Conceptual quality of the work. Is the work contemporary, appropriate, compelling? Does it provoke or intensify critical reflection? Does the work invent technical, physical or methodological approaches to TEI?
•        Execution (craft): Is the work well realized? Is it constructed and executed to a high standard? Will it be suitable to exhibit at the TEI 2012 conference?
•        Aesthetics: Aesthetic quality of the execution and experience of the work. Is the material, interaction and concept aesthetically engaging? Does the work invoke, insight or delight the senses or perception? Does it intensify, enchant, discern, amuse or reflect upon subtle, visceral qualities of experience?
•        Provocative: Does the work challenge the status quo of art and design theory and practice.
Submissions will be selected from a panel of expert jurors.
Art Explorations can include but are not limited to:
•        Art installations involving tactile, sonic, kinetic, and visually rich exposition
•        Inventions in robotics, sensing, toys, games and entertainment
•        Materially or textile enriched performative or experiential interactivity
•        Architectural prototypes experiences and installations
Submission Instructions
Submissions must NOT be anonymous. The two elements to the submissions are:
•        a link to a video (hosted on youtube or vimeo) showing the look and feel of the work and highlighting its interactive elements. The video must be no more than 5 minutes in length. Alternately, you can upload your video on the PCS submission system. If submitting your work is not possible in this format, please contact the chairs for alternative video submission instructions.
•        a 2-page written description explaining the concept, references and rationale behind the project in ACM SIGCHI extended abstracts landscape format (i.e. the template below). This document must not exceed 10 MB in size.
At the Conference
At the conference, selected Art Explorations will be installed during the demo session. It will be possible to exhibit a poster next to the installation or object. The written description of accepted submissions will be made available on the ACM digital library. There will be no opportunity to modify submitted material after acceptance. TEI 2012 will also post the videos from accepted submissions on www.youtube.com and link directly to this content from the TEI 2012 site. Copyright will remain with authors.

14.10.11    Your editor has a taster gallery of 12 pictures made at the huge 'Fresh' ceramics exhibition — which is now on at the old Spode factory in Stoke town, as part of the Ceramics Biennial 2011. The work of 41 ceramics graduates is on show, alongside displays of bricks and ceramics made by leading commercial firmsin the UK. There is a cafe, and much of the ground floor of the factory is open to photographers. The entrance is near the King's Hall. 14.10.11    Don't forget that paper tax returns for the self-employed are due in by 31st October 2011. Also of note is that the taxman has an amnesty on now for art, music and dance teachers who may have been taking "cash-in-hand" for lessons and not declaring it on their tax returns. 14.10.11    Mark Riley writes to say that "The Dance Floor" in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, is a new 3,000 sq.ft venue for hire in the town...
"Ideal for rehearsal space for drama or dance groups. Potential for a photographic studio."
Interested? Call Mark on:  0775 115 2634  or email:  thedanceflooruk@hotmail.co.uk 14.10.11    Advance notice of a major funding stream, called Catalyst. Some types of applications are already invited. Catalyst will help arts and heritage organisations to source private-sector money and sponsorship, and is described as a...
"private giving investment programme aimed at helping cultural organisations diversify their income streams and access more funding from private sources."
Application opening dates are... * Heritage applications opened: 29th September 2011. * Arts applications open: 1st November 2011. * Capacity building and match funding scheme open: 1st November 2011. * Heritage fundraising capacity building grants open: 1st April 2012. Full details at the website, including eligibility details14.10.11Blitz Games, one of the biggest videogames makers in the Midlands, now has its registration open for its Student Open Days. 14.10.11    The Arts Council has released its 2010-11 spending figures for Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent. Spending in Staffordshire has been nearly cut in half — from £402,968 in 2009/10, to £214,935 in 2010/11. Spending in Stoke-on-Trent has increased from £213,150 in 2009/10 to £332,608 in 2010/11, but £100k of that increase is accounted for by the fact that the Ceramics Biennial falls in 2011.

The organic process of exploration will unfold within the following given structural form:
- Every Friday the group will meet for 3 hours of co-learning, facilitated by the HomeBase team.
- 5 Hours a week will be devoted to developing the center through a BUILD project.

- A tour of Berlin, a hands-on gardening workshop, a beer making lecture, and visits to Preview art show and 3 central art Museums in Berlin is included in the program.
- The majority of the time, besides the two scheduled weekly group meetings (Salon, co-learning), will be dedicated to progressive art practice in the individual studios.

Create. Art and Technlogy conference in Berlin

Posted: 14 Oct 2011 02:46 AM PDT

We are inviting artists to participate at a conference that will bring together artists, hackers and designers, producers, tinkerers and engineers.
We will discuss and learn how materials, electronic parts, digitally operated manufacturing equipment and software can be used to create projects ranging from works of art to brand environments, from robots to childs toys.
All kinds of materials from cardboard to acrylic glass, electronic
parts and digitally operated manufacturing equipment are nowadays
available any time and knowledge is generated in open source networks.
But the most important thing are the people who creatively and
untiringly try things out and combine them anew. Only then something
new, unique and useful comes into being.

Create. Art and Technology brings together these
different people on Nov 4 - 6 2011 in Berlin.

By means of presentations and workshops basic and expert knowledge
will be imparted: How to code a microcontroller? What can a beginner
create with Arduino? How to process a certain kind of material? Insiders will present fascinating projects from the first idea till
implementation, chemists will explain how certain substances impact the environment. Experts will give tips on material procurement. Artists
will present new electronic instruments.

Create. Art and Technology gives answers to your questions and
inspires new solutions. People with different backgrounds will discover
they have a great deal in common concerning their projects and will
discuss various approaches. We are the factory!
