NEW PLAYS EVENING AT THE DRUM, THURSDAY 15th NOVEMBER

Posted: 08 Nov 2012 02:01 PM PST

MAT and Sister Tree are currently touring their acclaimed production of The Good Person of Sezuan. Alongside the tour, and coinciding with Jamaica 50, the companies are working with two writers, to develop ideas for new plays.

The writers – Cindy Claes and Angela McNab – have taken well-known 'classics' by Shakespeare and Moliere, and adapted them, to reflect aspects of Jamaican history and culture.

This special event will present scenes from the new plays.

Cindy Claes is a choreographer who tells stories through dance. She has led dance-theatre projects with artists in Jamaica. She is also a Dancehall lover. The play that Cindy has chosen to adapt is The School of Wives - Moliere's comedy of manners, Dancehall style!

Angela McNab is based in Birmingham. She has adapted Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice - now called TheMerchant of Port Royal. The play is set at the time when Port Royal was a base of operations for privateers such as Henry Morgan, and reflects the place of the Jewish community in Jamaican history. As Angela says: 'The Jewish community of Jamaica is probably the oldest Jewish settlement in the New World. In the early 18th Century, there were more Jews in Kingston than there were in London!'

This is a chance to see work-in-progress on these exciting new plays, and to hear from the writers about how they have gone about giving a Caribbean-style twist to these 'classic' texts!

Venue: The Drum, 144 Potters Lane, Birmingham, West Midlands B6 4UU

Thursday November 15th @ 7.30pm

Admission is free, but places are limited; contact the Drum Box Office on 0121 333 2444 to book your ticket

INFORMAL GATHERINGS FOR THEATRE/TV/RADIO PROFESSIONALS IN THE MIDLANDS

Theatre Cuppa is back and this time in the Black Country.   The Public in West Bromwich have kindly offered to host one for us.  It will be on Wednesday 21st November, 6 – 9pm in the cafe area on the ground floor.

If you are working in theatre, radio, tv or community arts in the West Midlands then we'd love to see you. Theatre Cuppa is an informal opportunity to catch up with other people working in the area; to connect personally and professionally with people you may or may not know – in a relaxed and friendly environment. Its a no pressure 'meet-up' and we are really keen to welcome practitioners working in the Black Country aswell as those in Birmingham.  The West Midlands is a hive of theatrical/creative activity and we want to celebrate that.  If you can't make this one, feel free to let people know what you are doing on our Theatre Cuppa Facebook page.

Children are welcome too, so do bring them along if you'd like.  If you're coming alone or haven't been before, grab either of us – Rochi or Ali – we'll be the ones wearing the carnations.

For travel details go to www.thepublic.com/getting-public  or ring The Public on 0121 533 7161.  The Public is very near the bus station and the metro stop in West Bromwich.

So if you're free on November 21st, do pop by and say hello, have a drink and a chat, and let others know what you're up to.

Looking forward to seeing you – and having a 'nearly christmas' cuppa!

Ali Belbin and Rochi Rampal
