'There is plenty to savour at the boundary-smashing BE FESTIVAL' - The Guardian

Next week, Birmingham will be awash with talented performers from all over Europe, as the 3rd annual BE FESTIVAL presents 20 of the most exciting new shows currently touring the continent, plus visual arts, workshops, discussions, concerts, dinners and parties.

The festival kicks off on Monday 2nd and Tuesday 3rd July at MAC Birmingham with a mesmerising show that won 1st Prize at last year's BE, and has since toured Europe collecting many awards along the way. This is your only chance to catch Sleepwalk Collective's 'As the flames rose…' before it transfers to London's Barbican Theatre this Autumn. The performance is followed by brilliant live music and entertainment.

The Main Programme at AE Harris runs from the 4th-7th July, and features four half-hour shows a night, plus daytime discussions, workshops and visual art exhibitions. See the eflyer below for details of shows and events.

Doctors: General meetings for Birmingham-based actors

Posted: 29 Jun 2012 12:15 AM PDT

A word from the BBC:

We are interested in hearing about actors who we can meet in Birmingham on the 12th and 13th July.

PLEASE ONLY SUGGEST ACTORS WHO LIVE PERMANENTLY IN BIRMINGHAM OR THE MIDLANDS AREA.

This is a local initiative and its purpose is to give us an opportunity to meet with local actors who we are unfamiliar with.

Please DO NOT suggest any actors who live outside of this area who "have a base" in Birmingham. We may have more general meetings in London at some point in the future and we are NOT INTERESTED in hearing from or about actors based outside the Midlands at this stage.

Thank you,

Stephen and Rowland

Theatre Cuppa

Posted: 29 Jun 2012 12:03 AM PDT

INFORMAL GATHERINGS FOR THEATRE/TV/RADIO PROFESSIONALS IN THE MIDLANDS

The next Theatre Cuppa will be on Wednesday 11th July. We thought it would be good to try out a new venue this time, see what that's like. So we'll be at The Blue Orange Theatre from 6pm onwards. For those who find daytime gatherings easier to get to, we'll have one of those again soon.

If you are working in theatre, radio, tv & community arts in the West Midlands then we'd love to see you. Theatre Cuppa is an informal opportunity to catch up with other people working in the area, to connect personally and professionally with people you may or may not know – in a relaxed and friendly environment. Children are welcome too, so do bring them along if you'd like.  If you're coming alone or haven't been before, grab either of us – Rochi or Ali -  we'll be the ones wearing the red carnations.

And if you haven't managed to get to the Blue Orange Theatre yet, come along and see the space. The theatre is at 118 Great Hampton Street, B18 6AD,  with free parking in the surrounding roads after 6pm.  For other travel details check out the website -

http://www.blueorangetheatre.co.uk/  -

So if you're free on the 11th, do pop by and say hello, have a drink and a chat, and let others know what you're up to.

Looking forward to seeing you – and having a cuppa!

Ali Belbin and Rochi Rampal

BE Festival Host Scheme

BE FESTIVAL needs you! – Festival Host Scheme

Would you like to offer a visiting performer a warm Birmingham welcome and play a fun and important role in BE FESTIVAL's success?

From 2-8 July, Birmingham will be awash with talented performers from all over Europe, as the 3rd annual BE FESTIVAL presents 20 of the most exciting new shows currently touring the continent – plus visual arts, workshops, discussions, concerts, dinners and parties.

You can watch our 2 minute trailer for BE 2012 here: https://vimeo.com/43680538
And you can find out more about the programme on our website: www.befestival.org

We need generous Birmingham-based people with a spare room to become a festival host in return for a festival ticket and the chance to make a great new friend from abroad. Performers receive three meals a day at the festival, and their transport is organised by us, so all they'll need is a bed and a shower.

Over the last two years, hosts have hugely enjoyed getting involved in BE. If you'd like to join the festival family and be part of the adventure, or if you'd simply like some more information about hosting, please contact Helena Scott-Hardy on helena@befestival.org, or 07809 885 235

China Plate presents Inspector Sands'…

Mass Observation

The Almeida Festival, Almeida Theatre, London: 5-8th and 13-14th July

"Inspector Sands keep you on your toes from the very first moment to the last. They are brilliant and reckless, precise and inventive, intelligent and frank. They are kaleidoscopic creators. Don't miss them!"
New York Theatre Guide

"We are all cogs in a vast and complicated machine. It may turn out to be an infernal machine which could blow us all to smithereens."
Tom Harrisson and Charles Madge, Mass Observation: Britain (1938)

Coronation Day, 1937: A young woman stumbles into a revolutionary rally aimed at shaking up British society and falls instantly in love.

Jubilee Weekend, 2012: A young man with a terrible hangover is stranded in an old people's home and loses reception.

Two cogs in the machine, a generation apart, come loose.

The new show from award-winning Inspector Sands examines 95 years gone by in a flash and an afternoon that lasts an eternity.

"Mass Observation is a piece that we have been researching and flirting with for some time and we're delighted to be working with the Almeida, to have this opportunity to develop and present it as part of their experimental summer festival. Its a leap forward for us – to be making a piece for this scale of space and the broader audience that the Almeida has. It's a significant moment in the evolution of Inspector Sands and we're really keen to see what you think of the show so far!"
Lucinka Eisler, Giulia Innocenti and Ben Lewis, Inspector Sands
Created by Inspector Sands and Lu Kemp. Text by Ben Lewis.
