Norwegian Season of Events

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 03:38 AM PDT

This summer we're presenting a visually stunning new exhibition by Norwegian artist Hariton Pushwagner. We've developed a diverse programme of events to complement the show, including live music, performance, film and video by Norwegian artists and workshops and talks inspired by Pushwagner's work. Here's a rundown of what you can enjoy at MK Gallery this summer.

Friday Night Films

Film still, THX 1138In collaboration with Independent Cinema MK, the curators of the exhibition have programmed a summer season of sci-fi classics, inspired by Pushwagner's work. Highlights include Chris Marker's visionary film La Jettee, constructed entirely from still images, Videodrome, with its innovative mix of horror and sci-fi, George Lucas' first film debut THX 1138, and the cult classic Blade Runner.

Live Music

Norwegian songstress SusannaThroughout the summer, we're playing host to a diverse range of Live Music events, showcasing the work of Norwegian artists and musicians. Ande Somby will present an evening of Sami singing, one of the oldest musical traditions still alive in Europe, Ny Musikk curates a series of solo concerts including the innovative Hardanger Fiddler, Nils Økland, Sound Artist Jana Winderen and singer songwriter, Susanna Wallumrod.

Workshops, Talks and Fair

A comic book workshopTwo series of workshops have been devised to complement Pushwagner's exhibition. Work with artists to create a comic book, and learn the techniques involved in stop-frame animation and flip book production. These workshops will be complemented with a talk on Graphic Novels by freelance journalist, curator and broadcaster Paul Gravett. We'll also be hosting a free one-day comic fair, where some of the best UK comic creators display and sell their work.

Video Space

Running by Inghild KarlsenThree new monthly video programmes have been curated to run in parallel with Pushwagner's exhibition, all devised to resonate with wider themes invoked by Pushwagner's practice. There are two programmes which resonate with Pushwagner's work curated by Natalie, the third is a selection of historical Norwegian Artist film (1960-1980) curated by Atopia – offering an insight into the Norwegian art scene at the time Pushwagner was creating his seminal works.

The exhibition will include collage works developed from archival photographs belonging to the National Spinal Injuries Centre archive at Stoke Mandeville hospital, and a sculptural installation that investigates ideas of human mobility and fragility.
