Exhibition at CMK Library

First floor gallery space

18 June to 27 July

Statement.

Painting is fun, repairing computers is not. My paintings are the result of reflecting upon twenty five plus years in a career repairing computers and industrial electronic technologies. I never chose to be a computer technician, It was something that just happened after leaving school at the age of sixteen. Now that I am making the change, when I look in the mirror, I expect to see an artist who is happy, but instead I see the reflection of a troubled man who wished he had realised his passion to paint twenty five years ago.

But to make the best of a bad situation, rather than throw away all the knowledge and experience I gained in repairing computers, I searched for a way to bring the passion for making paintings together with my disdain for repairing computers.

Here you have it. I am now destroying computer equipment with paint rather than fixing it. I aggressively attack the surfaces of the computer circuit boards. Firstly stripping away whole components, then using abrasives to break down the components to reveal, at least in part their inner structures. With no less aggression I begin to attack the circuit boards and LCD panels with acrylic, ink, pva, oil paint, solvent, and any other substances to hand. The visual results can be very unpredictable even nauseating, however the fact remains, I didn't repair these products, I destroyed them, creatively.

Here, these paintings slap electronics in the face, requesting a pause in the daze that the virtual world of computer communication tends to have on us. Here, my paintings offer you the opportunity for a personal, face to face metaphysical experience.

Klassenverhaltnisse (Class Relations)

Dir. Danièle Huillet and Jean-Marie Straub (Cert. PG, 127 mins)

Selected by Olivia Plender

Friday 15 June / 6.30pm / £5 (concessions £3)

Pre-book on 01908 676 900

Financed in Germany and filmed in New York, Class Relations is adapted from Franz Kafka's unfinished novel Amerika. Christian Heinisch plays a bourgeois German forced to leave his homeland after a scandal. He accepts his uncle's invitation to move to America, where he takes a succession of 'Joe Jobs'. Heinisch tries, but he is unable to shake off his old-world customs. Worse, the class structure in Europe never prepared him to have to actually use his hands to make a living.
