Join the team for theUK's biggest free arts festival, in Birmingham City Centre, on Saturday 8th andSunday 9th September 2012.

Six Summer Saturdays – Performance Opportunity

Posted: 15 Jun 2012 01:31 AM PDT

Birmingham Hippodrome as part of "Six Summer Saturdays 2012″ and in collaboration with "Natural Theatre" are offering an unique professional development performance opportunity. We are looking for fifteen regional practitioners with an interest in expanding their knowledge and experience of presenting work outdoors. Practitioners will work with Mark Bishop from Natural Theatre over a two day workshop programme which then culminates in the performance of "REDS" with Natural Theatre on August 11th in Birmingham City Centre.

Natural Theatre has been based in Bath for nearly 45 years. In that time they have taken their particular brand of street and non-stage comic theatre to nearly 80 countries including China, Japan, South and Central America, Nigeria, Central Asia and even Lapland. www.naturaltheatre.co.uk

"The Reds. Why are they there? What are they doing? Is it a flash mob? They are so purposeful; there must be a reason for their gathering. Where are they going? Whatever they were, I got some brilliant photos!"

Workshops

The first workshop will deal with the basic Natural Theatre techniques and theories. Use of space, keeping an eye on the team in undisciplined spaces, leadership, being led, character within uniformity. Less is more. No showing off…pay attention, the overall effect is paramount, not individual skills. Working alone as part of a group piece…quite often in a Naturals performance we don't see each other until the end but we can hear from what the public are saying that the others are around, doing their job!

And about how to set about finding the costume and accessories, how they must match exactly to obtain the amazingly vibrant effect the Red People can have in dull surroundings. The participants will learn one of the other NTC scenarios, one which requires more regimented actions, such as Freezies or Walkies. They will undoubtedly take part in a short foray into the outside world for a public try-out of what they have learned.

As with many Naturals performances it is the preparation for something pretty simple that transforms that simple act into something memorable.

The dates for workshops are July 18th 11am-5pm and August 10th 11am-5pm and they will take place at Birmingham Hippodrome. The final performance follows on 11th August. It is essential that performers are able to commit to the full three days. The project is free but you will be asked to attend an evaluation meeting at the end of the three days.
If you wish to apply then please e-mail jane@metaphysique.co.uk with one side of A4 saying why you would like to be part of this project and give details of your background and experience in performance work. The deadline for expressions of interest is 5pm July 4th. We look forward to hearing from you.

Devoted and Disgruntled in the (West) Midlands

Posted: 15 Jun 2012 01:23 AM PDT

From Theresa Heskins at the New Vic:

If, like me, you've been trying and failing to get along to a Devoted & Disgruntled event, then I hope you'll be glad to hear that the D&D Roadshow will be visiting the New Vic on Friday 13th July.

It's a unique opportunity to have the conversation about theatre that you want to have.

If you've never attended an open space event, please make this your first.  It will change your way of thinking about conferencing, and I guarantee you'll go away inspired.  It's an open-ended event that enables a self-organising group to use its collective imagination to deal with complex issues.

Although you'll set the agenda when you come along, there are plenty of thing I already want to get talking about:

In the face of the Institute for Economic Affairs' suggestion that £1.6bn could be saved by cutting DCMS, how can we as an industry make the case for continuing subsidy of the arts?

With a catchment area that includes a city with some of the highest levels of multiple deprivation in the country, including literacy levels amongst primary aged children that stand out as being the poorest in the country, our work in the fields of education and social change is some of the most important the New Vic does.  We're not alone: throughout North Staffordshire, there seems to be a clear emphasis on art for social change rather than for art's sake.  What does this mean for artists? For the society we make art with and for?  For the local economy?

If you'd like to hear more about the event, and for details of how to register, travel, catering etc, visit the D&D website athttp://www.devotedanddisgruntled.com/events/dd-roadshow-newcastle-lyme/

I'd be very grateful if you'd pass this email on to anyone you think may be interested, or write your own invitation.

Looking forward to seeing you on the 13th July,

Devoted & Disgruntled at the New Vic

Midlands-based erformers and designers sought for devising project

Posted: 15 Jun 2012 01:21 AM PDT

Teasel Theatre Company is looking for performers and designers interested in working on a devising project in early November 2012 and late January 2013.
After extensive r&d work, we're aiming to finish the piece in readiness for an eventual production at the Edinburgh festival next summer followed by a UK tour, although no commitment is required at this stage.
The story is of a little girl in 1930s Germany who has a series of bizarre dreams which she writes up as a Christmas present for her psychiatrist father and then dies shortly after. He is devastated and becomes obsessed with the idea that the dreams contained a warning about her death that he should have spotted. Ultimately it emerges that the dreams were in fact a warning about the work he was becoming more and more involved in. The piece looks at dreaming and the unconscious – it comes from a Jungian case study – and an under-explored vein of 20th century history. It's also about grief, regret, legacy and inheritance. This might all sound very gloomy but the plan is to keep it dynamic and packed with light and beautiful moments and humour too. We're aiming for something like Pan's Labyrinth crossed with A Disappearing Number  via Oh What  A Lovely War (if that makes any sense!). More information is available here.: http://www.teaseltheatre.co.uk/Teasel/Dreams_To_Her_Father.html
Funding and dates are to be confirmed but the proposal is to work in the Birmingham area and we're expecting to be able to pay performers around £400 per week for 5-6 weeks work in total.
If you're interested in principle, please get in touch as soon as you can via the contact details at www.teaseltheatre.co.uk. Please include a CV and any information that might be of interest about similar work you've been involved with.
We're looking forward to hearing from you.

Melting Pot’s Production of Hamlet in Birmingham and Stratford in July

Posted: 15 Jun 2012 01:06 AM PDT

Seven actors, one iconic play, no problem!  In July, in Birmingham at the Station Pub, Kings Heath and in Stratford, at the Dirty Duck,Hamlet will be getting the Melting Pot treatment.  Brace yourselves for a pacy intense and moving drama that's funny and dark in equal measure.

There's definitely no doublets!  but there's doubling and coupling and couplets aplenty, swordplay and wordplay, love and death – what else is there?  All the essential ingredients have once again been thrown in the Melting Pot.  Cut to fit the Station and the Dirty Duck and the time, this is Hamlet Unwrapped!

Sunday 8th and 15th at 3pm at the Station and Sunday 22nd July at the Dirty Duck, Stratford at 4pm – theses are  the dates and times and tickets are £5 and are available on the door. At the Duck it  will be taking place on the garden terrace at the rear of the pub, so there's plenty of time to have a leisurely meal beforehand or just a refreshing drink.

"The light & shade in the production & the performances was superb, and the time flew by. I can honestly say it was the first time I really got what this play is all about (that includes performances by Branagh & Anton Lesser) & it was truly riveting, perhaps partly due to the intimacy of the setting which created an intimacy & involvement that drew in the audience and which combined with the power & honesty of the performances" – audience reaction to Hamlet, The Lamp, Digbeth, April 2012

Heartbreak Productions new open air tour

Posted: 15 Jun 2012 01:01 AM PDT

Heartbreak Productions will be touring their version of Noel Coward's PRIVATE LIVES this Summer – all shows are open air, often in the setting of beautiful National Trust properties and gardens. All dates and venue details can be found at: www.heartbreakproductions.co.uk

PRIVATE LIVES by Noel Coward

directed by Peter Mimmack

It's the 1930s and the cocktails are flowing… but will it be a Smooth Move or Whiskey Sour for Elyot and Amanda?

Divorced couple Elyot and Amanda are inadvertently reunited on their respective honeymoons to second spouses. Believing themselves still in love, they abandon their new partners and run off but it's not long before the champagne bubbles burst and they are back to the arguments – more bitter than angostura - that plagued their tempestuous marriage.

Irreverent, hilarious and sophisticated, Private Lives overflows with Noel Coward's celebrated eccentric wit and skilful comedic staging and, his glamorous, aristocratic characters seem incapable of taking much of anything seriously for long—a condition which proves contagious for the audience!

Moving from misfortune to full-blown absurdity, this fast-paced comedy proves to be the perfect recipe for a stylish evening's entertainment that combines all the bubbles and froth with the depth and complexities of a vintage champagne.  And, all served up with a splash of "ooh, la la" and a dash of "je ne sais quoin"!
